Just added an image of the GLORY (ex SALAMIS GLORY, etc.) at Alang taken on Saturday morning. She beached on Friday night. Also at Alang and in the hands of Sanjay Mehta of Priya Blue (BLUE LADY, RITA, NEW ORLEANS, MAXIM M) is MONT, the longest ship ever built and fifth largest ship in the world.

Thanks for those, it is sad to see Seawise Giant on the beach, but just how many other tankers have ever lasted as long? She has had a checkered life and not actually sailed for some of it, but hey she is still the largest in my book!! Forget GT, she's a tanker, dwt is the concern here Largest at birth and still largest at death; any other ship of any sort managed that?

Isn't it interesting that both SALMIS GLORY and REGAL EMPRESS had the same smoke areas not far from the engine rooms?

WOW... beaching the ex-Knock Nevis must have been a real feat. Her draft was too deep for the English Channel-- I always thought she was unbeachable!

Since Sanjay Mehta can get that on his résumé, I'm sure the shipbreaking world is his oyster.

Also worth mentioning that Normandie came close. And in fact Seawise Giant was not the largest at birth. Originally built for Nomikos, bought by C.Y.Tung and lengthened by Nippon Kokan, Tsu to become the largest.

She was never delivered to Nomikos though & I don't believe anywhere near completed before the hull was purchased by Tung and lengthened to become the largest. She never went to sea before the lengthening.

I suppose there is always Titanic as well.

Seawise Giant/Knock Nevis was outsized in gross tonnage by a group of four Batillus-class tankers built at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in the '70s, all of which have been scrapped. Taken as a group, these would have been the largest in birth and in death.

Which is why I said DWT and to forget gross tonnage, which is not a useful measurement for an oil tanker, being more concerned with how much she can carry v space available. MONT is both longer and has [had] a higher DWT than the Batillus quads.

Hello,

Thanks Peter for the information. Mine were accurate, it was a problem of beaching at the best condition.

Another one has now 80-90% of "chances" to finish at Alang, it's the Saga Rose because no one is interested by the vessel and - if I'm well informed - scrapping is now seriously envisaged. Very seriously ... It's only a question of time and of money (the owner has a gigantic appetite for a such old ship, not in so good mechanical shape)

The Doulos is another case, but I am doubtful... Alang should be now plain like an egg.

Thanks for the pictures, Peter. Good to see REGAL EMPRESS' funnel is still standing.

The beaching of the ex-SEAWISE GIANT really means the end (of sorts) for the era of the 70s mammoth tankers or ULCC's (tankers of over 320,000 DWT). There are one or two other old ULCC's engaged as storage vessels, a couple have become FPSO's and the rest has been scrapped.

Overall, the ULCC's days are numbered. Only 4 ULCC's were built in recent years. Hellespont of Greece had them built at Daewoo around 2003. Hellespont sold them with a profit(!) to Euronav of Belgium and OSG of the US. Unfortunately, two of these vessels have already become storage vessels
