Sad to say the Queen Mary is looking rough. I've got one more night (tonight) aboard QM and have enjoyed being on the old girl the past two nights, but oh boy....she's in desperate need of some TLC....she's leaking all over the place, paint is chipping and falling off, the hull needs to be painted. Interior looks fine for the most part, but the exterior is in rough shape.

Had an excellent turn out for our QM - Cruising Authority event...about a 100 people showed up. Interviews with Gavin MacLeod and others went great! Ecveryone seemed to have a fantastic time! Even got to interview Mark Perry about Big U.

Hi Barry,

So happy to hear the show went well. Again, sorry I could not make it but even today, I'm still not up to snuff. Sad about the MARY but she's been in need of some serious attention for the better part of a decade.

All the best,

Peter

I thought that there was a new renovation project underway?

Has Delaware North taken over management of the QUEEN MARY yet?

There has certainly been some attention to detail with the interiors, but her exterior is pretty bad. I don't want to say too much but there seems to be some overall issues with charging too much for various services. The hotel itself is fine, the beds are comfortable, there's a nice flat-screen TV...I enjoyed being able to open the portholes in our stateroom. I wish something would be done with the parking lot....I've always thought it was complicated and I don't care for the monkey-business with paying to park, with pay gates everywhere.

Peter, I got your message. I was really sorry to hear you weren't feeling well and it would have been great to meet you and conduct an interview in-person. I hope you get well soon!

Malcolm, there was a renovation project that was ongoing, but there was recently another management company that has stepped-in to manage the facility, and I'm not sure what direction they want to take the Queen Mary. With a ship like the Queen Mary, funding the constant renovations and maintenance required for a static ship are HUGE.

Poor Queen Mary was leaking everywhere on the Promenade Deck because of all the rain southern California has been getting.

Her funnels received a much needed paint job at the end of 2008 but as Barry posted, the black hull needs to be painted. It does'nt look as bad as in her final Cunard years but it looks weathered.

Heres a few pics i took on the ol gal in may 2009, its part of an album in downloading over next few days i'll post a link to it when its ready,

It gives a good indication of her (near) present state.. plenty of work going on at the time, but like you correctly say, the outer areas definately need some tender care, but the internal areas are for the most part magnificent....

I stayed on board for 1 night prior to boarding zuiderdam to vancouver, It was a life ambition fulfilled to have finally stayed on Queen Mary,so happy i managed to fit it in...

She was leaning a few degrees to starboard when i was there as they were cleaning the hull, and i heard they were going to tip her the other way in the following week's.

It was such a pleasure to meet Mark Perry and his partner and interview him in-person about his documentary about the Big U. Mark was so gracious and hopefully I'll be able to edit the video and post the interview soon.

Here are a couple of photos that show the terrible condition of the Queen Mary's exterior:

This is all over the ship:

The forecastle looks very well cared for in this image as did the boat deck and davits in Barry's video. The black paint on the hull looks weathered as does the white paint on the starboard side of the ship. on the exterior decks she looks pretty good and the former 1st class interiors still look very good.

Perhaps they are leaving the hull as the last bit of restoration? There is new carpet throughout, interior decking on the Promenade is in great shape, the lounges look like they have been cared for, Sun Deck looked great and yes the bow area was in good shape. The ship was leaking everywhere from the rain however. I think when Disney had the ship they removed the windows in the Promenade for some reason, and now they are back, which is a good thing. The moat around the ship was clean....that area would often have lots of trash floating in it. The kitchens all got new cookware, and the staterooms in the hotel have decent new beds, iPod docks, flat screen TV's so I can't complain. I just hope that her exterior gets the paint it desperately needs.

That line of rust in the second pic looks like it's eaten it's way through from the inside which is pretty serious.

I saw the Queen Mary in December and I too saw the decay of this great liner especially her lifeboats, they were rotting everywhere! It costs a lot to get in too but never got to see her Dining Room, that probably cost extra. But what was disappointing was the "Ghost" tour, the tour guide so overly dramatized the event that it frightened my 7 year old Grandaughter into running out with her father! I was in a way very disappointed because she is a Hotel so certain rooms were off limits at certain times but it makes it difficult for the sightseeing tourist vesus hotel guest.

Thanks! The first time I ever saw her she was a Hilton or Hyatt hotel and I stayed on her with my brother who was visiting at the time. I also got to see her several times when the Spruce Goose was still next door in the dome. I flew back west on vacation in 2002 and made it a point to enjoy the Sunday Champagne brunch offered on the Queen Mary which was quite nice. I spent a week exploring the communites and old missions between LA and San Diego then boarded the Carnival Ecstasy for a 4-night cruise to Catalina and Ensenada.

Bubble rust is never good. There's no sandblasting down to clean metal with this stuff; it's rusted through.

From where? Windows? Decking above? Not to be overly paranoid, but this makes me think of when a piano fell through rotted out deck plating onto a luncheon in progress aboard Aquitania near the end of her career.

The Promenade deck and some of the lounges had buckets capturing dripping water from above. The Sun Deck was the culprit mostly.

Some of the leaking you saw on QMs promenade was probably the drainage system doing its job. Water from the sun deck above will drain down via the promenade deck I believe. A few years ago I was on QM durring a down pour and I noticed this.

Are the expansion joints the cause of the leaks? QE2 was a leaky ship as well towards the end of her career-even w/hundreds of millions of dollars spent on her over the years.

QM does indeed need a paint job. I wonder if her operators have to hire union paint crews which of course doubles or triples the cost to paint.

The best solution may be to hire 'day laborers' which are all over Southern California. Pay 'em 10 bucks an hour and start scraping.

That's a big possibility, if you check out my first Queen Mary Tour video, you see a glimpse from the Promenade looking up at the expansion joint and there was a lot of rust and corrosion.

I'm all for day laborers scrapping and painting.

I saw parts of the QE2 leaking like a sieve in a storm. However, Gerry (ex Cruisetalker who worked for Cunard/carnival) said that many of the QE2's leaks were internal pipes rupturing as they flexed in a storm.

I asked Captain Woodall why QE2 didn't have expansion joints and he said QE2 should have had them. Commodore Warwick said QE2 did have expansion joints when she was first constructed, but when the suites were added they removed the expansion joints.
