I read on Maritime Matters that the former ss Independence has run aground near Alang and has been abandoned. I wonder if she'll end up like American Star (formerly ss America)?

She is unscrappable, unrestorable, a $5 million dollar hole in the pocket.

Structural cracks were mentioned too. I wonder if it was let to run aground so the owners could walk away just like slumlords with properties in bad neighborhoods? They lick their wounds and move on.

She'll be picked clean like American Star was and probably be finished off after years of storms. I don't know what is worse for such a beauty, scrapping or this fate?

Hello,

We have to be careful with news from Alang. There is battle between the breaker, the broker (his brother), GMB and the Environmental Ministry. The problem is that the tug scheduled to beach the Platinum II earlier is now scrapped because of severe failure. The Platinum II has had at least on severe leak just under the water-line. On the last picture I have, you see a metal plate at low tide. The leak was patched a few months ago and was reported as "under control".

But the battle is now for money. To beach - if it's possible - the cruiser, they need at least 3 tugs without the safety to arrive at the right plot in one piece. And no-one wants to pay for this risky business. If things have not changed since last month, the vessel was in one piece and "beachable", but at high cost.

I love this fate... Now she will continue to exist for 10+ years, and we can watch one of the most legendary American ships become one with the ocean, while flipping the bird at Alang!

I don't think so.... A solution will be found, but remember that it's a battle and we are in India. Where Platinum II is placed, it's a big problem for Alang entrance and leave the ship there will not be permitted by Environmental Ministry. It's a question of time and money, in a few word: "Who will pay for a fault done by the Environmental Ministry (if you are looking on one side of the problem) or by the breakers (the other side)." The first decision was to allowed the dismantling at Alang. It was with "false" papers, before green activists action, but the GPCB (Gujarat Pollution Control Board) give the green-light after the Platinum II and his tug were inspected.

Then an action from BAN India, then a red light from the central government. Then another green light (because no other solution) from the same.

So who is responsible of the problem, is all the Indian question of today. But trust me, a solution will emerge from Alang ...

I just read on Facebook, Peter Knego tried to get close to the ship. He says it appears the ship's funnels are no longer visible; that she may have broke in two.

If true, I guess that is better than her being scrapped. The Indy always was one of my favorite ships.

Hello,

Peter has published a photograph, quite far from the Indy, but she seems to be in very bad shape and unmovable.

http://maritimematters.com/2010/04/alang-update/

I'm not sure if she is still in one part ...

The photo looks like a starboard-bow view, in which the liner listing to starboard. Very hard to tell but if you can imagine that angle, it makes sense. Peter states that it appears she is down by the starboard bow, as well.
