Hey Folks:

Does anyone know what has been happening with the Pacific (ex Pacific Princess)? Haven't seen any news since her arrest.

Since the subject came up and its a slow day I thought I would share a couple of pictures of her seen in NY. We were waiting to get off the ship and she came steaming up the Hudson River, then sailed behind us to her dock. She looked so small...

How bad is her condition as she lies in Genoa? Who owns her now? Is she in too poor a condition to sail again?

Nice pics!

I'm guessing you were on a Carnival Spirit Class ship? They are one of my favorites.

The rail design and the little blue lights attached to the rails are a fairly unique design feature to this class of ship. I also recognized the chairs and tables in the outdoor cafe. Very Carnival!

NORDIC EMPRESS (aka EMPRESS OF THE SEAS) and I'm guessing REGAL EMPRESS as well.

Great birds eye view!

Wonderful pics! No apologizing for hijacking needed!
I remember the first time I saw her. She was in LA and had just been sold to Princess. The only other ship I had seen in person was the QM! When we pulled up on our boat I was shocked at her small size! I was just a kid, but remember thinking the same thing each time I saw a "cruise ship" after that. The old Queen spoiled me I guess.
Those were good days, though. When I got my first drivers license I used to borrow the car and head to the harbor to see QE2, Spirit of London, Fairsea, RV Star, Tropical, Regeant Sea, all three original Princesses, Stella Solaris, Oraina, Monterey (PFL), among others. It's hard to believe that all these ships are now gone or "Classics".
Thanks again for sharing and bringing back such great memories of the "Good Old Days".

Michael

Thirty years ago she was one of the most famous ships in the world, perhaps The most famous, thanks to The Love Boat. And now she just sits at a pier fading away. What a shame. If a cruise line isn't interested in this beloved ship then perhaps some billionaire should buy her for his own private yacht.

Although she isn't considered a 'classic' by our terms, it would be a milestone in the history of cruise ships if she were sold and scrapped. I don't know what her condition was prior to her 'arrest' but someone out there has to be in the market for a smart looking cruise ship with a storied past?

I think I read somewhere that technically she wasn't allready in the best conditions : both engine and hull problems ? And there is also the asbestos-question. PP was on Greenpeace list of "dangerous asbestos ships" (because of her "Loveboat" high profile) and with present economic conditions, I don't know if even a sale for scrap is a feasible option.

But I can be completely wrong

Your right about her not really being a "classic". What I really meant is that it's hard to believe how much time has past and how the cruise industry has evolved since her early days with Princess. Instead of classics I should have said past thier prime.
Perhaps I was talking about my own passing years without knowing it!

I didn't mean to question your specific use of the word, sorry. I should have said that some CT members may not consider her a true 'classic' ship even with regards to her 'historic' background. She is however a legend of the small screen and will always have a place in history with that regard. I remember the first time I saw her she was in St Thomas. I got to tour her, back then all we had to do was show our Military ID card! I took a few pictures and remembered how disappointed I was that she wasn't as big and bright on the inside like it showed on TV. That was one of my first experiences with cruise ships.

Assuming she is for sale I wonder if Voyages of Discovery have had a look at her.

Depending on her condition, she could then run with her old Love Boat sister ship Island Princess which is now the mv Discovery

At the very least, Voyages of Discovery could use her for parts if her condition is beyond further use as a cruise ship. I sailed on her when she was new for Flagship Cruises.....as Sea Venture...to Bermuda. She was a nice, small ship, but we remarked then how small the cabins were. The Italian staff and cuisine was very good in the dining room. Hard to believe that was 38 years ago!

I still have an original newspaper clipping from when she came to the rescue of a broken down QE2! Remember that?

Odd that you should mention that. I was on the QE2 when we were rescued by Sea Venture. We were on an Easter Cruise and as you know, she went dead in the water. It was a difficult and long transfer to Sea Venture as the seas were rough. We were flown home from Bermuda compliments of Cunard. It was not an experience I would enjoy repeating.

How amazing! I was only 14 then but a huge crazy 'ship fan'. It was all over the news because it supposedly happened in the then infamous Bermuda Triangle. There were great pictures in a lot of magazines and newspapers. It was all very exciting to me. I am sure your experience was not pleasant, but one moment in QE2's history where you can say "I was there!".

Great images of a 'classic TV' cruise ship. Her compact size compared to later big ships surprised me as well but when I first stepped onboard PP in the early 1970s she seemed huge! Of course to a 11-year-old she was a big cruise ship.

In comparison QE2 was the 'giant' ship that visited L.A. in those days and the Princess along w/the slightly larger Sitmar ships were the 'normal' sized cruise ships in the 1970s. Times sure have changed!

My guess is that the cost of repair and refurbishment would exceed her value. Shame first ship I ever worked on.

Hi Mike,

I fear that the PACIFIC might be one of the very first early 70s "white wedge" cruise ships to go for scrap. She was arrested in the middle of a refit and then neglected, so she is now in the worst possible state that a ship could be. She is almost forty years old and inside she is probably a mess, so it would cost lots of money to reactivate her. End of the line I'm affraid.

Another endangered early 70s ship is the FLAMENCO I (ex-SPIRIT OF LONDON), still rusting in layup somewhere off Malaysia.
