Mona Lisa sailed from Bremerhaven at about 15.00 hrs today.

Tonight the AIS ship position maps are showing her as cruising at 13.5 knots and proceeding to Piraeus.

She is scheduled to arrive there at 08.30 hrs on the 10th September 2010.

Will it be a static role or the ship breakers?

I am glad that I managed to see her in Squamish, BC during the Winter Olympics, but am sorry that I did not manage to get on board her, to see her nice old panelling etc.

At present there is no confirmed news on the future of the Mona Lisa.

The berth at Gothenburg, where it was hoped to berth her, was reported as only being available for five years so it was not considered suitable.

There has now been talk that she could go to Stockholm as a static unit but that is not confirmed

As for reports in "save the Kungsholm " group on facebbok today the Kungsholm will NOT be a student living in Stockholm according to newspaper Svenska DAgbladet. This should also have been confirmed by mr Hallgren. A sad day. Most likely she will now stay in Pireaus for a while, dont know how long. and the be sold for scrap. There have been talking of the city of Gothenburg buying somw interior fittings if she will be scrapped

I guess that leaves the former Stockholm as the last of the SAL ships still in service.

After the terrible earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, there will have to be a huge amount of reconstruction, requiring contractors & workers to be brought into the area. With a shortage of accommodation, due to the destruction, I imagine that there would be a need for temporary accommodation vessels. With Mona Lisa just coming out of service, she may be in a good position to be used as such, especially with a recent history of the same. That would be a bit of a reprieve for her, for a while anyway.

So many of these old ships suffered in the downturn after 9/11 & also in the economic woes of recent times, that it would be good if some of them were able to be used in a constructive way after this recent disaster.

Graham.

Exept for a one off one way voyage to somewhere like India I doubt she will be allowed to sail anywhere at all after September 30th, and New Zealand is a long way away from Greece. The problem is that after September 30th she suddenly becomes far to dangerous to remain in service with all that flammable woodwork, perfectly safe till September 30th 2010 and then so dangerous she must be banned from sailing commercially. I do hope this lovely ship finds a good home rather than being pulled apart.

If she was making an empty voyage to New Zealand then it is possible that she could be used
there as an accommodation ship when she arrived.

You still have the ex Black Prince, of Fred Olsen Cruises, in use as an accommodation ship at Haiti.

She was also not Solas 2010 compliant.

I suspect it is possible to get a waiver for single voyages without passengers. Also ships not trading internationally may not need to meet SOLAS 2010. Ole Esmerelda was originally going to run cruises in Venezualian waters I believe which would have meant she only needed to meet local regulations if carrying passengers. Another example would be the pretty Lofoten which will sail into 2011 with all her wood panelling intact as she will never goes out of Norwegian waters. Nordsternen may however face issues if she continues to run to Spitsbergen?

MONA LISA is indeed tied up near Piraeus since last week.
Her future rests uncertain.
Here is a shot I took a few days ago:

This isn't the first SOLAS purge that has ever happened. Assuming paperwork doesn't shuffle at a breakneck speed to get Mona Lisa out of Greek waters before October, the answer to everyone's question will be how Piraeus previously handled newly non-compliant vessels slated for disposal during previous times SOLAS was updated. Maybe it's just a matter of rubber-stamping the voyage plan.

Entry into India for noncompliance obviously won't be an issue. I'm sure they've already streamlined the process.

Hope is not gone yet. Latest update from mr Hallgren on Facebook 5 days ago. From what i understand he wants to bring the ship to Sthlm under the current ownership and make then finally decide if he can buy the ship in Sthlm?

"Still working hard to take the ship to Stockholm. A guarantee is sent to the ship owners for the costs to take her to Stockholm. For the moment it is up to the ship owners if they can accept to take a discussion and negotiations regarding the terms of docking the ship in Stockholm."

She's such a beauty. No one has seen photos of the SAGA ROSE since she went to the Japanese breakers yet. Or did I get the wrong ship?

Hi

You got the right ship but Saga Rose went to China to be broken up, not Japan.

No pictures have so far appeared of her since her arrival at the ship breakers yard.

Dambrosi2.....if you think Mona Lisa is a beauty, check out how she looked as Kungsholm for Swedish-American Line. She surely was one of the all-time great beauties!

That I have done, wish they'd still make them like that. I got to see what Peter Knego had of his photos, but I'm always looking for more.

She does look gorgeous. It was fantastic to see her in Squamish this year for the Olympics, with the beauty of Howe Sound as a backdrop.

The story that I heard about her was that she was built at John Brown's prior to them building QE2. They were so desperate for the work to keep them going, till they could bid for the QE2 contract, that they offered to do the job for a very low cost. They lost so much over this contract, that even with the profit made on QE2, they went bankrupt.

It seems that both Saga Rose & Mona Lisa, contributed to the bankruptcies of their builders.

I do hope that they manage to save her.

Graham.

Bscot: from what i have been reading the yard lost £3 milion on building Kungsholm. There is a book about Kungsholm coming out in 2011. i am sure the bulding process will be covered in the book too. SAL was very good in negotiating with the yards and from the book "Amerikabåtarna" i know that in severeal occasions they paid extra money to the builders just to keep a good relation during the building process. Because SAL knew the builders were lossing money on the contract.

Last word is that the ship has actually been sold to Far East interests.
She will leave Piraeus in the next two weeks for Constanza where some repairs will take place before her delivery to...
Muscat in Oman!

There she will act as a workers accommodations ship, for some projects that they are building.

I'll adopt a "wait and see" approach to this news. Sometimes this kind of deployment actually happens (INDEPENDENCE and CROWN M come to mind), sometimes it's just a cover-up for a oneway trip to the scrappers.

Has there been any confirmation of the Oman deal yet? IF she have been sold i suppose there would be some statement from Mr Hallgren about this? The last statement from him was that he have sent a guarantee to cover the cost to take the ship to Stockholm

Hello everybody,

"Mona Lisa" left Piraeus Anchorage approx. 90 minutes ago, bound for Suez (!) according to her AIS signal.

Best,
