The Franconia and Laconia, constructed at Wallsend-on-Tyne by the well-known firm of Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd , have been built for the Liverpool and Boston service during the summer and for the New York and Mediterranean service in the winter and early spring season.

Though not so large in point of gross tonnage, nor built with the object of attaining the unrivalled speed of the Express Cunarders Lusitania and Mauretania, the Franconia and Laconia embody features—especially in regard to their passenger accommodation-that place them in the very front rank of modern liners

Length over all: 625 feet.
Breadth over all: 72 feet.
Depth from top of houses to keel: 90 feet.
Gross tonnage: 18,000 tons.
Height of funnels: 140 feet.
Diameter of funnels: 17 feet 6 inches.
Height of masts above keel: 200 feet.

Unfortunately both ships had very short lifespans. FRANCONIA entered service in 1911, was torpedoed and sunk in 1916.

LACONIA entered service in 1912, torpedoed and sunk in 1917.

Cunard built new ships using their names in the 1920s.

Here are the mortal class accommodations. Just think the fares then are that of a mass market ship today which is better than the first class space and amenities at the time.

That first class lounge resembles the pics I've seen of the Lusitania and Mauretania.

The first class lounge looks like a combination of Mauretania's w/simpler version of Aquitania's ceiling. IMO, the pre-war pair was certainly better looking than the postwar ships.

I particularly like the "vibratory machine" never heard that concept before...funny! Those old ships would have been a blast to explore.
