Argentina was the only South American country to operate long distance intercontinental ocean liners, although always with ships of moderate size and speed. The Rio de la Plata, Rio Jachal and Rio Tunuyan held down the 43-day round trip from New York to Buenos Aires via Rio de Janeiro, Santos and Montevideo, returning via the same ports plus Trinidad and La Guaira (Caracas)

The spacious facilities were designed to compete with Moore-McCormack Lines' popular "Good Neighbor Trio" from the 1930s. The air-conditioned accommodations included large staterooms with private or semi-private bath, a main lounge, smoking room bar, library, dining room and a tiled swimming pool and lido.

"Once you're aboard one of the modern 'Rio' vessels, you will find that reality surpasses your expectations ... you are surrounded by Latin American warmth and hospitality, so characteristic of the Argentine."

I wonder if English, Spanish, or both was the official language onboard; announcements in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.

Handsome ships, built in Italy by their looks! They were sold and traded a bit more.
But there were an even more handsome trio of British-built combi-linres with avant-garde looks.
One was Peron and they had to change name after the revolution....

In January of 1962 I was 11 years old & I sailed with my family on the Rio Jachal from New York City to Rio de Janeiro. If I remember correctly, the voyage took almost two weeks. Spanish was spoken on board. 99% of the crew & staff spoke only Spanish. I remember beginning to learn my numbers and letters in Spanish at the bingo games. The ship had a small theater that showed American movies. It also had a small swimming pool where I was given the full treatment at the ceremony for crossing the equator. Two passengers: a very pretty Argentine girl and an older man played the parts of King Neptune and his queen. The food was superb. For lunch I ate fillet mignon sandwiches. At dinner a violinist and a guitarist serenaded the diners. Halcyon days...

BTW: The Rio Jachal caught fire while tied up at a dock at downtown Manhattan on September 29th, 1962. She never sailed again.

DREW: Welcome to Cruise Talk! THANKS for taking the time to share your memories of sailing aboard the Rio Jachal. Sounds like quite an adventure for an 11 year old.
