I have always wanted a 1:1250 scale model of the Home Lines Atlantic of 1982. I saw her arrive in Bermuda on her maiden arrival as a kid in 1982 and have had a special attachement to the ship ever since. Non of the standard producers have as of yet made a model of her. So, I found a gentleman in Germany that makes custom models of ships in 1:1250 scale. I sent him pictures, plans and a line drawing of the ship, and he has built me a model. He sent me a few pictures along the way of the progress, and I created this collage of the ship, drawing, and model shots. I am very excited to receive this model soon.

The model looks great Thad.

As a model collector in myself, I wonder how is the feeling to get a custom built model rather to buy a stock model from Marirtime Replicas, Scherbak, Albatros and Classic ship.

Can I be rude and ask for the price of such model? is it made from cardboard or wood?It doesnt look like resin. (The matirial that most premium to scale makers use)

The model is made out of wood. I am really excited for my first truely "custom" model. I am thinking I might have a model made of the Fairsky if this one turns out as well as it looks. I found the guy from an ebay auction of a model of the Windsurf he also created, which unfortunately I did not win, but I might commission one as well.

His name is Harry Piel and his email address is:

Oh, I forgot to mention that the model was just under 200.00, so somewhat pricey, but at the moment, one of a kind..

I received my custom made MV Atlantic (1982) of Home Lines. I am really happy with the model. While it is made of wood, and really light, I think it gets the propotions of the ship just right. Here are a couple of pictures of the model with my Sextant Homeric (1985), also of Home Lines

How cute!
Atlantic didn't appeal to me when new as she was a far too compact version of ssOceanic.
But her boxy shape seems to have healed with time, ownership and livery.
I just acquired a lovely second-hand CTC's "Southern Cross" from now defunct Carat.
I am sure they did ships of that era and they are difficult to find.
Hope you commission "ssFairsky(84)" soon!

Hmm, I had never seen that model. Just found one on ebay.it, but the proportions look a little off to me. Still might keep an eye out for one.

Thad I think that is the image, not the model. I have 3 metal MSC models, not MELODY, and they are all in proportion and very nice as far as onboard models go, better than the ceramic things. The boxes I have are all longer and not so high as that shown there, hence I am sure the photo has been messed up. There is a CT'er who has the Melody maybe he will advise.

Claudio, that is fab! The model wasn't for sale when I sailed on Melody in 2006 and I got instead the Opera....any swap welcomed!
Melody was a fab little Oceanic with a shorter bow and my God she rode storms very well(2 from Rio to Genoa).
One of the huge heated seawater pools had a magrodome. At night, opera diva sang, duringthe day, an argentinian pianist entertained on popular melodies during tea!
Who wants to watch football whilst swimming?
Hey Thad, might order a second ssFairsky(84) after 29 november(last second hand market)...deal? Feel free to reply privately as I sailed ssSky Princess!
