Here is the owners new Facebook page on the ship:

The MV Veronica

What are your thoughts about the ship's renovation? Doesn't look bad at all. I hope that the ship does well in her new role. If only they put back the divits and life boats back on the ship. Then it would be ok.

The pictures of the cabins look nice at a first glance but one finally does not see too much. Whether this is still Kungsholm is another story.

It seems as if some money was spent, and there was a plan for the reconversion. Are cabins put together like with the Rotterdam (V) ? J

I wonder who decided it was a good idea to paint over most of the woodwork in the cabins.

It's hard to judge much from the photos that exist but of course this project is not about historic preservation, this simply happened to be a ship that was available, cheap, and in good condition.

Anyway, it is not as though P&O did not already spend a lot of time and money progressively destroying the original ship.

I think the conversation is ok. And it is clear that quite a large amount of money have been spent. I think it was necesary to put some of the old staterooms together to get decent size modern hotel rooms. It would be very interesting to see how the public rooms looks. Specially the dining room.

The davits and lifeboats will surely be back soon. The owners have stated that they will keep the engines working and moce the ship around the persian gulf for big events etc.

This are good news but it's not necessarily the case that she will need her old lifeboats back for doing that.

Perhaps only a small number of boats will be required if she is moved to another port with just the crew on board.

Regarding woodwork I wonder if it has been removed so that she meets the Solas 2010 regulations.

I wonder if rafts would be used instead of any lifeboats. The Independence sailed for 5-years w/most of her lifeboats removed.

They could just take on rafts if ever needed. I doubt she is SOLAS compliant Neil as they would have had to compromise the asbestos removing her wood and I gather that is not the case.
She won't need to be compliant where she is, and probably not either if she ever just moves around the Gulf States. The GCC have a set of Seaport rules and may well give exemption in such cases [with vessels between the member ports?] - I don't know and am not going to go and find out though she will probably never move.

There appears to be no AIS signal coming from her so expect if she is moved she could be excempt.

With the pictures at present available she certainly looks nice inside.

Lets hope some more are available.

Quite a mix of 1960s SAL, 1970s-1980s P&O/Princess, a touch of 2000s German (the beer pub type room), and now 2010s Middle Eastern Moderne.

The wood that was left in the public rooms is still there so it is obviously not a SOLAS issue. I guess someone just didn't like it in the cabins.

I sort of love it. However, the thing that really makes me smile, is seeing the old CANBERRA chairs in the dining room.

Yes I saw those too. They are awesome.

This ship has a very special place in my heart. I have sailed her twice and also met the first love of my life onboard. Amazing memories.

I am glad to see that someone took a chance on the Mona Lisa. They certainly provided an example that under the right circumstance, an old ship can be renovated into a 4-Star hotel that attracts non-ship lovers. This is the second ship (after the SS Rotterdam)to become a hotel. And it didn't go over budget because of asbestos or extreme regulation issues that plagued the renovation of the SS Rotterdam.

Very true. The same out-of-control costs that happened w/Rotterdam V plauged the Queen Mary rebuilding in 1968-70. $70,000,000. in late 1960s dollars!

I'd love to see those, but somehow cannot find them on the web site. Where exactly can they be found, please?

Thanks,

Best,

I wish I did Raoul. You couldn't look at them as one plan. You could only view one deck at a time, and they were pretty small but when you ran your curser over an area it enlarged the area on a side view.

Raoul,
Try this link. It was posted on LL and should work for the deck plans.

Enjoy.
