Rumors are flying. The extensive remedial work started by Quail cruises stopped when they could not pay the bills, and there are no takers to complete the work and for future trading.

I sailed the Loveboat 10 years ago and was in bad shape. Quail could not afford to keep up with her constant breakdowns, and Gerry Herrod looked at her and turned away. She had terrible leaks, rust, tank rot, and numerous problems with the hotel systems. She would have needed $40mil to get her up to snuff and still saddled with small dated cabins plus no room for balconies. She is too big for niche cruises, and too small for the mass and middle market. The Island Princess, now Discovery was in much better shape.

There's more to it than just Quail, I gave the links to the fraud case with CVC before. The compromising of the asbestos requiring increased funds and so on...

But, yes it appears she has been sold to the breakers, Cemsan Turkey for 2.5m euro.. [6m was due to the yard, I wonder how much the outstanding wages to the crew are first though?]. The Italian news, search google.it, is full of it, a number showing pictures of the R ship Pacific Princess [odd as she has been under their noses for nearly 4 years].

What a pity how her career came to an end. It was only 10 years ago when she was still in the spotlight and sailing for Princess.....then "disappeared" outside the North American market, and now leaving this world...

How sad to see her go. So many memories of seeing her sail every week from Los Angeles during the "Love Boat" years. I would go to the harbor and watch her and Fairsea leave whenever I could.
How exciting those days were! I would spend the afternoon "visiting" the ships and exploring every inch I could until the announcement to go ashore was given. Then a quick drive to Ports o Call village to watch them leave as they sounded their horns.

Great memories.

Michael

I got aboard Pacific Princess in Fort Lauderdale a long time ago when I was a travel agent. I used to sit in front of my television on Saturday nights and look for the cabins as Julie McCoy would give them out to passengers. Very few fictitious cabin numbers actually were real. And how tiny the cabins were from television.

It was a great day being aboard her. Sad that she is coming to such an end. I guess it is cost prohibitive to do anything but let her go to the breakers. Like it was said above, she's just in a bad way.

Time marches on and at 40-years-old, she lasted 10 years longer than her builders may have anticipated. It is hard to believe the still modern looking Love Boat twins are 40!

The Pacific Princess was a decent "sea keeping" ship as well. One memory is sailing north from Los Angeles on Fairsea, and off of San Francisco both Pacific Princess and a Royal Viking joined the northward flow. The seas were heavy, and quartering on the port bow. We sliced through the swells and overtook both of the others. The Love Boat was doing much better than the Viking! We arrived in Vancouver on time at 07:00, Pacific Princess was in at about 10:00, while the Royal Viking did not arrive until almost 15:00. That long bow just kept digging into the swells. We also saw either Mariposa or Monteray heading south on that tirp. Only the Royal Viking remains in service; a shame to see the old girls disappearing.

Thanks for that. I must have been away while those posts were all new. Interesting reading all the same.
On another of these northbound coastals, we overtook the Stardancer in heavy spring weather, and was she taking a real pounding! You could see the vibrations in the glass of the windows as she was slammed about. The arrived almost 10 hours late.

When I was a young man, I would wait each Saturday night to see the boarding of Pacific Princess. And I would have my deck plans on my lap and note which cabins were used on the show from the real deck plans.

Yes, I know, NERD !!!

And I got to even go aboard when I was a T.A. that was a treat.

So sad to see her in such bad shape. You'd think, someone would find it good to keep the definitive cruise ship from going to the breakers. She had her day and paved the way for all the ships that came after. If it weren't for Pacific/Island Princess, cruising would never have made it as mainstream as it has.

It was nice to see Peter's photos.

I must admit that that I never saw the engine room when the original Love Boat series was on the air.

However, did they ever show the engine room in an episode of the Love Boat?
