Does the QM2's massive superstructure crack? I know there were issues with QE2's superstructure cracking, but does QM2 also experience this in a very subtle way?

I have never heard of her having issues with cracking. I heard QV did at one point but not QM2.

QE2 suffers from cracks in her superstructure due to metal fatigue because it is made from an aluminium alloy. QM2 has an all-steel superstructure and should not suffer the same problem.

I found minor evidence of cracking in some door frames...and there were notes written on the door frames indicating a date and measurements. I wonder if these records were made by Stephen Payne? Not a big deal, but I thought it was fascinating to see the notes that go back as far as 2009

I have to agree QM2 is built out of all steel for her superstructure . There fore should be very few or no cracking of welds or of material. Today's designs and weld process are very controlled. Barry what cracking you are properly noticing on the door frames and and happens on joiner work ( what we call non structural items like door frames, insertion walls, etc in the marine field) happens. They are made of sheet metal, and many different materials. Like inside of your house or car.

While it might not apply to QM2, I assure you, steel can crack. Cracks occur mostly in the quenching process, however, they might not show up right away.

That and improper tempering are the two most common reasons why steel will crack.

Now, I don't know this because I'm some steel whiz: my stepfather was a steel welder for about 30 years.

Indeed Russ , you are so correct. I have seen defective steel... Even though it been certified by a regulatory agency. Have seen some look like it been delaminating. Same holds true for aluminum . They were some aluminum high speed ferry boats built about 7 years ago in washinton where the manufacturing process was wrong and the hulls started to delaminat and corrode . They had to remove all the gear and construct brand new hulls.. Cost the aluminum manufacture millions?

Granted it is 100 years ago now (or there abouts) but tell it to the Germans especially.

Remember the Berengaria (ex. Imperator) and Leviathan (ex. Vaterland) both cracked (or was it the Majestic ex. Bismark) and I think I remember somewhere the Aquitania did too but in a different way. Wasn't there also an issue with the Europa and the French fixed it by adding lots of extra structural steel in the refit to the Liberte?

Put enough weather strain on even steel and it can give way.
