I suspect like many of you I like to pick up a piece of classic liner memorabilia on Ebay if the price is right. But for some reason over the last couple of months prices paid for brochures etc have rocketed upward. Pieces that at most used to go for $200 are now up around $600!

Has the economy recovered that much? Did some collectors win the Powerball lottery?!

I think it's just greed. I have a dual night cap set of crystal decanters with the SS NORWAY etched on them. I've brought my price down three times and each time I've had watchers and no one bids..not sure what's up with that. The decanters cost $50.00 each one set has the Farewell Season and the other is the normally made decanter set.

Ebay is a funny bird. Sometimes when I sell on the system all my products go on the first round of selling. Other times, it takes a couple of rounds to get them sold.

Buying on Ebay is a fine art. You just have to be persistent. Most sellers put stuff up to test the waters and see what kind of action they get on any one item, and if it doesn't sell on the first round, the prices usually come down reasonably.

But Ebay has changed the seller pricing on sold items and what we tax we pay on items sold. The higher the sale price, the higher the final tax.

You just have to know how to keep your eyes out for those items that aren't selling, because like I said if they don't sell on the first or second round, sellers usually bring down their pricing.

It all depends on the item, how its presented and the initial asking price. One highly respected seller lists rare, unique, and one of a kind desirable items. The auctions commence with low starting bids and sell for respectable prices. A bidding war may occur thus raising the price. If there is unusual interest in an item sniping is the end result. On occasion a seller might attempt to deceive a potential buyer by listing a common item in an unusual fashion. One seller of SS United States items always lists at a very high "Buy it Now" option. His items are re-listed repeated times in order to entice perhaps a newcomer with little knowledge of market prices. The only way to describe ebay is a crap shoot in a wild west Dodge City style saloon. Buyer beware.

There is something suspect about all this; my guess is there is some shill bidding going on.

No one in their right mind, or at least no one who knows anything about collecting linerania, would pay $500 or $600 for items that would normally go for less than $50 or $75.

A cutaway of the ssUS from a 1952 LIFE magazine got up to about $600.....you can walk into practically any used bookstore and pick up a copy for $20 or less.

The frustrating thing is that, while Ebay says it encourages folks to report things like this, there's nothing it will do about it because the higher prices go, the more they take.

Tell me about it. I had seen a the white SS NORWAY introduction book, I think that was the one done by John Maxtone-Graham for her lauch...may have been given to passegers. Anyway, I was shocked to see it go for over $500.00 a couple of days ago. Sure, I had to drop my price at BIN considerably, but as to doing the wrong thing just to get the price I want is a no-no for me. I won't do that.
