The 1953 launched Birger Jarl is one of the very few old oceangoing overnight passenger ships left. Although modified, she still offers a rather original experience. I encourage anyone interested in ships to take advantage of this nowadays rare opportunity to travel aboard such a ship.

Great video. I sailed the Harald Jarl many years ago to the Norwegian Fjords.
You are very lucky to have these gems a train ride away.

Thanks. While Harald Jarl is a different design and a few years younger she is indeed similar - especially by nowadays standards where not too many ships of that vintage are left.

That would be a 17 - 23 hour trains ride. Since I live in a 'remote' place it is not as easy to get to Stockholm as it might seem.

I overnighted once on a train from Milano to Vienna. Got a sleeper from Copenhagen to Oslo. Not something I do anymore. Still inter-European air flights are usually about an hour.

I did it quite often but there are issues. My cabin aboard Birger Jarl actually reminded me of a sleeping car. There was more space but it was rather noisy - since I booked on short notice I only got a cabin below the water line - beside the engine noise there was also the noise from the ice.

Maybe a bit more than that. My problem is that the next airport is a bit more than an hour away - also, I had to fly via Amsterdam - so one still ends up with halve a day for traveling.
Grant, I tried emailing you at the address in your email and it did not go through. Can you contact me at jkoshuta (at) travelserver.net with an alternative email?
Thanks,
Joe
