I was wondering what was the exact itinerary that the Rotterdam and Oceanic used to sail from NYC to Bermuda and Nassau. I think they left NYC on Saturday afternoon, arrived in Bermuda Monday for the Day, had Tuesday at Sea, arrived in Nassau sometime Wednesday, stayed overnight and left Thursday morning, returning to NYC on Saturday morning. With a premium of berths in Bermuda, I am surprised NCL has not tried to recreate this itinerary with maybe an afternoon at the private island somehow thrown in..

Sailed that itinerary several times as a child. I think your assumption was right, I remeber the Bermuda call was short and required a tender. The Nassau was overnight and docked.

I checked on one of my Oceanic schedules from 1982 and the itinerary was

Depart New York, Saturday 4PM

Arrive Bermuda, Monday 8AM
Depart Bermuda, Monday 5PM

Arrive Nassau, Wednesday 9AM
Depart Nassau, Thursday 3AM

Arrive New York, Saturday 8AM

I made this cruise on her once and remember sitting out on deck and seeing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse off the port side late on the Friday afternoon.

Sounds like a great cruise with plenty of sea days.

This was my first ocean cruise, aboard OCEANIC in 1979--the triangle route NY-Bermuda-Nassau-NY. Speeding along "a tutta forza" at 27 knots from port to port.

I'm sure the reason we don't see such trips these days is the cost of fuel, even with today's more fuel-efficient vessels. And only 2 days in port out of a week just doesn't appeal to a majority of cruisers. (I loved it!)

Rich

Need to check the logs she was not running at 27 K I do not think. To do 27 she had to have all four boilers lit and then never did that. She wan on three with a max speed of 23 and generally never went past 21.

Still a great ship and a great experience. Earlier in the 1970s I remember standing on the stern when she was doing 22k. Plus we did that in 1981 trying to run through a bad storm.

Allan, what you write does make sense, but I had that 27 knot figure in my mind--went back to find that travel journal and that's also the figure I noted at the time, during the leg from Hamilton to Nassau, and also up to NY. No official log report from that voyage, just a daily programme with a note from the Captain saying we had made in excess of 26 knots during the night--this may have been a temporary thing to make up speed, but, as you say, they would have had to light up the 4th boiler, something I am not sure about.

I don't know Rich.

The run NY to Bermuda is 670 nautical miles and they gave themselves about 40 hours = 16.5 K

Bermuda to Nassau is 804 nautical miles and again they gave themselves 40 hours = 20 K

Nassau to New York was 960 nautical miles and them had about 50 hours = 18 K

I will be publishing her trial data but to get that top speed needed four boilers and she only ran on three in operation. Maybe she got a boost from the currents .....

You should also keep in mind that Oceanic only added the Bermuda stop relatively late in her career a few years after Rotterdam had entered into competition. For many, many years Oceanic was direct to Nassau, with a much longer stop there, and Doric handled Bermuda against Statendam.

Also, for the first few seasons, she and R'dam went in different directions. One would stop at Bermuda first the other Nassau first. Only later did they offer the very same port order.
