New York Times report

The bit about even doing a little cruising seems far fetched, given SOLAS.

Would Cunard agree to use of the name Queen Elizabeth 2?

What port would want this, and where would they find the customers for $400 a night in a small cabin remote from the best parts of town?

As the ship is registerd at a different port to the Cunard liner there is no reason why she should not retain her name.

I believe a condition of the sale is that she could not cruise, carrying fare paying passengers.

I was wondering if that condition was only for a few years or forevermore? I can't imagine who would worry at this stage.

I really do not understand the negativity over this project nor all the comments.

The investment group bought the ship, including her name, and they have done a good job on maintaining her overall. They just spent a lot of money to ensure that she is in class and that she can sail under her own power to the Far East. They have spelled out a basic plan.

As for the name ... its the name of the ship and why would they be forced to change it now? They took the Cunard wording off the hull long ago ... and I am sort of surprised they kept the Cunard funnel markings. But clearly Cunard did not require them to remove the name ... it was part of the asset that they paid so much money for.

Cunard did restrict the ship's ability to compete for a period of time. Also I think I heard Cunard had a no scrapping for 5 years clause or something along those lines.

No where have the owners suggested they would sail her with passengers. They have suggested that she would be a movable hotel and that makes some sense.

As for $400 for a hotel room. That's the going price in many cities around the world for a luxury hotel.

The owners were very clear that she would be rebuilt into an all suite hotel. Other than possibly saving a few "show" cabins the majority of the QE2's cabins are going to be rebuilt. Tourist Class will be gone and with it all the small rooms, Bibby cabins, etc.

The idea is clearly to trade on the ship's iconic name and reputation. She was wildly popular in life, had a strong following including in Asia and legendary image. If they chose a "smart" location for her and market her correctly there is no reason that she can not draw customers. If they can make enough to make a profit remains to be seen but so far they have shown some good business sense in what they are describing.

I think it will be a wait and see because they will take another year before she is open. But I hope they can succeed and so far they seem to be working in the right direction.

However she will not be the QE2 that sailed for so many years. Like the Rotterdam she is going to be a modern adaptation within the hull. I would assume some public rooms will survive and they have made a commitment to restore the iconic historical items and place them aboard the ship in some form of display/museum.

But the Queen is dead ... long live the new QE2.

Although she never seems to have made a profit since arriving in Los Angeles I can not remember anyone suggesting that the ' RMS Queen Mary ' should have had a name change when she was sold and arrived in America !

Long may the name ' Queen Elizabeth 2 ' remain on this ship.

"The goal for the final design is to preserve the soul of the QE2 — many of the original furnishings and much of the décor will be incorporated — while creating a modern five-star hotel".

I can imagine how you can achieve both!

Since there is truly very little original to the 1969 designs they would have to either recreate the original ship or else it will clearly all be a modern adaptation. Cunard in the later years actually went backwards trying to make the ship look more art deco and like her predecessors.

I guess you're right. This appears to be a well invested operation, and the Dubai people have taken good care of the ship.

If having an overnight stay in a stationary ex-Cunard Queen can be accomplished more cheaply and conveniently than having a onvernight in a current cruising Cunard Queen, I guess the business model has potential. We should wish this business well.
