After several false starts, the PACIFIC left Genoa today (27 July) behind the
tug IZMIR BULL. Destination is the scrapyard, presumably Aliaga.

Love Boat makes its final run to Turkish scrap heap

Aaron Spelling's The Love Boat, starring Gavin MacLeod as the ship's captain, ran on the US television network ABC from 1977 to 1986.
The show was set on board the Pacific Princess, which mainly sailed from California to the Mexican Riveria.
Each week passengers and crew members, caught under the Pacific Princess' romantic spell, engaged in love affairs or humorous encounters during the one-hour show.
"This ship has undergone several modifications over its lifespan. It had been decommissioned for five years, and renovation now would have been too costly," Ceviker said.
Turkey's Izmir Ship Recycling Company acquired the 42-year-old Pacific for 2.5 million euros (NZD$4.1 million).

The vintage cruiseliner arrived from Genoa, Italy, at the breakers in the seaside town of Aliaga in Turkey late on Tuesday after a difficult trip in a violent storm, Ceviker said.
The Pacific began taking on water and required the help of additional tugboats to make it to Aliaga. It was now listing on its starboard side at Aliaga.

She was pretty rundown, when I sailed her in 2002.

wow...sad, very sad...use to enjoy watching her depart out of vancouver. i even got a tour pass for her when we were allowed back in the late 80's.

Many eons ago, when I was but just a young and aspiring travel agent, we got aboard Pacific Princess in Ft. Lauderdale.

If memory serves it was the same day that we toured Stella Solaris and the Cunard sisters.

Travel agents were touring the ships that day - it was the holiday season - The captain on Stella Solaris treated us to copious amounts of ouzo after a day of wine and cocktails on the other ships.

Evidently as Stella Solaris was sailing from the pier the group I was with stood there and serenaded the ship with Christmas Carols.

That was a really good day...

The red funnel to the left in the video is the remnants of the Atlantic Star ex. Fairsky. She is going quick.

I wonder if Discovery got spare parts when she was in Italy this winter? The sister ships were in the same ship yard for a long time.

Horrible news at MaritimeMatters:
Selim San reports from Aliaga that two workers were killed and another six injured from asphyxiation from gas exhaust during efforts to pump the flooded engine room of the listing ACIF (ex SEA VENTURE, PACIFIC PRINCESS, PACIFIC).

Very sad

was that while still being towed or when on the beach though? Bet they wished they had left her in Genova. She has to be upright before a permit for breaking is issued it says - might be a difficult job looking at her angle and position against Rochdale One. If she keels over they are going to have to scrap her anyway.

I am surprised they don't just counter balance and sink her into the mud. Easier than getting her pumped out and upright but she will block a lot of the beach. But they can cut her up quick -- look at how much of the Atlantic Star is already gone -- and their problem will be solved.

Horrible news about the yard workers.

Pity that she did not sink enroute to Turkey. It would have been much better than her slowly get dismantled.

I was surprised by the media attention the former Pacific Princess received. She was featured on the NBC Nightly News the other night and I cannot think of any other passenger ship that received national attention (here in the states) when they were sold-off.

BTW, I had some great times as a kid in the 1970s on those two ships. The Princess and Sitmar twins all hold happy family memories.

No other cruise ship, former or present-day, was or is a GLOBAL television and cultural icon - the Pacific Princess was and evidently, still is.
