At an event in New York last evening Cunard announced plans for what they are calling a major overhaul of the QM2. She will be out of service from the end of May till the end of June 2016 going to the shipyard in Germany.

They said they will be adding 30 double cabins to the Britannia Club and 15 single cabins to the ship although did ot supply details.

The Britannia Club will also be expanded.

The kennel will also add 10 to its capacity.

One would think there is more planned, but not yet announced, if the ship is to be out of service for a month during the beginning of the prime summer season.

Obviously, they have taken passenger comments to task, and are going to do the work to bring more of them back, and with a refit, hopefully attract more travelers who can pay the price for a transit or her world voyages.

The announcement posted earlier today looks like they are targeting generational families, and also people who want to bring Buffy and Spike with them on a trip.

She hasn't seen a refresh in some time, so I guess, she is due for a scrub, polish and refit.

Carnival has big shoes to fill with new ventures across several lines, and QM2 is their star portfolio ship.

They must keep her up for traditions sake.

Here are the details from Cunard...

As Cunard marks its illustrious 175 year history with the arrival in New York of its flagship, Queen Mary 2, it is proud to announce the next chapter of innovation and investment, introducing new designs and guest experiences to the world's most iconic ocean liner.
From the company's inception, Cunard has been at the forefront of ocean travel. Through establishing the first scheduled Transatlantic Crossings, to the first electric lightbulbs and en-suite bathrooms at sea, to the grandeur of the floating palaces of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, to the launch of the current fleet.

To ensure the tradition continues, Queen Mary 2 will undergo an extensive 25 day dry dock refurbishment at the Blohm+Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany next summer, 27 May- 21 June 2016.

Queen Mary 2 single stateroom layoutThis major refurbishment will further refine and refresh guest interior spaces and launch new exciting innovations designed to exceed guest expectations. Three of the key developments are announced today, reflecting the changing needs of Cunard's guests:

• Research shows that increasing numbers of guests are seeking to holiday in multi-generational groups – grandparents, parents and children. Often this necessitates one member of the family travelling as an individual. To support this, and for those simply travelling alone, for the first time, 15 Single Staterooms will be introduced onto Queen Mary 2 during the refit.

• With further growing trends for those booking Balcony staterooms and those wishing to have more flexibility in their dining arrangements, 30 additional Britannia Club Balcony Staterooms will be created on board. Guests travelling in these staterooms will be able to dine at a time of their own choosing in the dedicated Britannia Club restaurant, which will be expanded.

• Just as families are holidaying across the generations, so pets are increasingly seen as integral to the family group. Queen Mary 2 is already the only cruise liner in the world to offer dedicated kennels and currently carries up to 12 dogs and cats on each Transatlantic Crossing. To meet strong demand - these kennel places frequently sell out - a further ten kennels will be created for four legged travellers.

With an eye to the detail that differentiates Cunard, both a lamp post and a fire hydrant will be installed on the area of deck reserved for dog walking as part of the kennels development, so that dogs from either side of the pond will feel equally at home. This was previously a feature of the kennels on Cunard's former flagship, QE2, and was first introduced on board Queen Mary at the suggestion of The Duke of Windsor.

Extensive research has informed a series of further developments which will be revealed over the coming months, building on the flagship's strengths as the epitome of luxury on a grand scale.

Richard Meadows, president, Cunard North America, said: "Queen Mary 2 is an icon in the world of luxury ocean travel. A ship that turns heads everywhere she goes, she is the pride of the Cunard fleet and we are committed to ensuring her reputation grows ever stronger."

"These enhancements are just the beginning of an exciting refurbishment for Queen Mary 2, and we look forward to making more announcements about this impressive refit in the coming months," Meadows added.

Cunard sold themselves short by abolishing single cabins when the ship went into service. The demand for singles cruising has increased over the years. NCL has addressed the void with a multitude of single cabins along with a common mixing area where continental breakfast is offered along with pre dinner cocktails. A very nice touch. I'm glad Cunard is addressing the issue. Singles sailing with Cunard have been penalized by having to add a 75 percent surcharge for every booking.

Cunard is also addressing the issue with the layout of Kings Court buffet. Different entrees are located in opposite locations making it difficult to enjoy a meal.

I also hope Cunard makes the QM2 more New York friendly. Yes it does offer a number of round trip New England & Caribbean cruises, yet lacks any back to back Transatlantics without a Hamburg extension.

I look forward to the enhancements.

The deck plan for the refit has been released and typical Carnival Corp they are shoehorning in the singles to make they totally undesirable cabins. One has to hope they are putting it a lot of sound proofing or those passengers will be miserable.

I would bet the single cabins are being wedged in where they could not fit a reasonable double. They are adding 30 doubles at the top of the ship including a few insides.

Its amazing that only NCL has taken the single cabins seriously to create an attractive space. By the by though BMW I was on Norwegian Breakaway in June and the continental breakfast for the singles is not that true .... they put out a few pastries and have the coffee machine in the Studio Lounge. (Later in the day they put out cookies.) It's a nice touch but calling it breakfast is a bit of a stretch for most people.
