If you are comfortable letting your kids explore on their own, two-way radios are a great way to keep in contact. We are traveling with our two boys (11 and 9) in Dec. and we are planning on bringing them. I feel comfortable enough to let them explore and if, for example, we are on the sun deck and decide we're going back to the room, we can let them know right away where we will be. We use these at home if we go somewhere as a family and split up. We can tell each other when we're ready to meet up again and where.

If you don't have any, they are pretty reasonable now. K-mart has them for $25.00 ea. and their range is 2 miles.
Just an idea!

And a good idea, it is. Also, on our last cruise we traveled with four families and one family could not get an adjoining cabin for their kids. They were a little worried about night time (16 yr old and 7 year old were sharing), so they brought along a baby monitor to be able to hear what was going on in the kids cabin. We had a good laugh when one of the parents told us that he heard his 7 year old daughter, in the cabin one afternoon supposedly taking a nap, pick up the phone and order room service. She had very specific instructions for chocolate milk and the bagel and lox with NO LOX. Cute, huh?

That was really cute - the 7 year old ordering room service!! At least it was free.
We met two chaps on the Veendam in March and they had each had a walkie-talkie and it was hillarious watching them use them and check-up on each other. They were writing an article for a travel magazine and I think they did every activity that was listed in the daily programme.

How about pagers for the kids? The bigger the ships the harder they are to find. Kids just have no sence of time, even if you put a watch on them. Does anyone know if some ships rent or supply pagers? I would have to think there would be great demand on a ship like the Voyager. If not, what a great new revenue source. Just think of the number of units lost or damaged..."Gee I didn't know I had to take it off when I went swimming"

The only pagers I'm aware of on RCCL are the ones they give the parent when you drop your child off at the kids programs/activities. Probably so they can reach you if there's an emergency or to let you know an activity is done.
If they did start renting them, you'd probably be better off buying your own two-ways if you think you'd have a use for them at home. I'm sure the possibilities are endless when you have kids (or husbands, just kidding). My son takes his when he goes to a neighbors outside so if I need him to come home, bingo, I just press a button to either signal him or I talk to him, that way I don't have to bother the parent to tell my son to come home. Plus, if he decided to wander to another neighbors house, I can reach him just as easily. Anyone have any other ideas for two-ways. I'm sure ther are some creative people out there.

This has become a really interesting topic.

Yes I do have many ideas on the application of two way radios, but feel it may be too controversial to express them.
Better that I refer to George Orwell and his science fiction novel "1984". His predictions came true but a little late in history
