I'm planning on sailing on REGAL EMPRESS's two-night cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to Grand Bahama Island departing Wednesday 7 January.

This may be one of the very last chances to sail in this ship, as it is rumored that she will be retired at the end of January.

Is anyone else planning on going or interested?

Yes, but not on that date. Any information on good spots for taking pictures of her in Ft. Lauderdale would be highly appreciated. (sadly, most of the time she is underway is at night )

In Lauderdale you can walk out to the end of the beach at the inlet for great photos.

I took some good photos of her from onboard SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS in Nassau.

Unfortunately I cannot go. You know I sailed her in both lives as Olympia and Regal Empress.

If you can, get a Sun Deck suite with all the mahogany.

She is a charmer! Regal Empress has more personality than most classic liners and beyond any boxboat.

You can walk all of the public decks within an hour.
She is full of surprises. Do take the starboard stairway from the Restaurant gallery to the main deck. There are a row of cabins on the port left Main deck only accessible from the Restaurant deck forward lobby. If you look closely one can find Greek lettering and signage from her Olympia days.

She will make you forget about QE2, [ducking for cover].

I expect a full report upon your return

Are there any other locations? What is that building at the harbor entrance?
Did you see her from aboard Sovereign of the Seas while at sea?

I regret that the Regal Empress will be added the the list of classic ships I failed to sail in because there were better options available at the time.

Cunard Fan, we all have lots of cruises we would like to do, and most of us can only do some of them. But we don't all list them as planned cruises on this forum until they are actually booked and we have our documents.

If you are really serious about ever taking a cruise in real life, you need to get yourself a passport. Beginning this June that will be required for everyone taking a cruise out of any port. That would be a first step for you to gain credibility regarding your travel plans.

Start making arrangements now for your passport--as we go through the Winter months towards Spring, there is bound to be another surge in applications.

Rich

This one is less expensive than staying at a mid-range airport hotel! No excuses when it comes to the fare!!

Ernst,

Try the Sheraton Yankee Clipper. It is right on the beach and was built in the 50's. If you have a balcony on the ocean you an see the ships leaving. It also has a large window behind the bar that looks into one of the pools. A bit tacky but lots of fun.

As Joe said, the Sheraton (both of them) on the beach are good. For ship watching, a room in the tower at the Hyatt Pier 66 can't be beat, although the price is steep. I've also used the Embassy Suites alot, again in January this year, and from the top floors on the east side you can see the cruise ships. The rebuilt Marriott is now the Fort Lauderdale Grand, and friends away on Maasdam right now, said it was very very good-but again expensive. Top floor rooms on the south side have a harbour view.

Thanks for all the advice!

Any other suggestions concerning the ship itself? Are there any 'secret spots' one should not miss? (=what do you want me to film?)

Well, count me in on January 7! I've been wanting to make a trip on the REGAL EMPRESS for some time now, so I guess that I better jolly well do it.

Speaking of the Yankee Clipper, I'd bet we would all love to have this view;

I've seen the Sheraton Yankee Clipper, it's totally awesome. When you drive right up to it from the back on the highway. It looks just like the stern of an oceanliner. BTW, I have a couple of those beautiful postcards you like the one you posted in this topic Joe. It became my first of many postcards I've collected. I also love all of the photos you took of the REGAL EMPRESS departing Ft. Lauderdale and in Nassau, Bahamas. just gorgeous.

Ok, I'm booked and confirmed for January 7th. I have a small, outside single cabin on Upper Deck.

I'm looking forward to experiencing this classic before she leaves service.

Recommendation, take scads and scads of photos. As much as you can, I'm glad I did in '96 just 2 weeks later, my late husband had both knees totally replaced. I'm glad I took the photos when I did.

I do my best to bring back as much video material as reasonably possible.

(My trip is booked but it won't be the January 7th cruise)

Just FYI, this and all REGAL EMPRESS' other two-night cruises are now calling in Nassau, not Freeport.

Nassau has much more to offer than Freeport IMO.

I look forward to seeing you, Frank, Greg, perhaps Wayne, and any others onboard.
