Was wondering if anyone could tell us anything about these islands? Is it best to go out on our own or should we go for one of the tours?

When in St Martin got on a tour and in St. Thomas go on your own. Our guide in St. Martin was great and sang songs, gave alot of history in a nice air conditioned bus. In St. Thomas we were disappointed in the tour as it was an open, crowded jitney and you couldn't hear what the guide was talking about much less cared. Couldn't stop and take a picture of the beautiful bay. Go on your own here.

What tour did you go with in St. Maarten?
We would like to shop and do some snorkling....should we shop in St. Thomas and snorkle in St. Maarten? Or vise-versa?
Any other comments about these islands would be helpful! :-)

We did the Orient Beach excursion in St. Maartin where we sat on the beach, rented a jet ski, and basically had a wonderful relaxing time. In St. Thomas we went on a catamaran sailing trip to St. John then went snorkeling in St. John. We saw baracudas and sting rays while in St. John and the sail on the catamaran was an incredible way to spend the time getting to and from St. John. If you like to shop, I hear that St. Thomas is great for shopping; much better than St. Maartin.
