We are flying to London on May 27, 99 and leaving from there on May 30 for a 14 day cruise on the NCL Dream to Scandinavian Capitals, including St. Petersburg, Russia. Any suggestions on clothing during the first two weeks in June. Also can anyone recommend any tours in these cities. We were stationed in Germany in 1966-70 but never traveled north. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, sounds a great cruise. The wheather in scandinavia and Russia may well be pretty warm to mild in June. However rain is possible! We get quite a bit of rain in London...so take a light rain coat and a sweater. Remember the cost of living is pretty high in Europe, especially London..but even worse in Scandinavia.

I hope you take a few days to see London.

Malcolm, thanks for the info.
Since we will be in London for nearly two days before we cruise, and you are from there, can you recommend the best tour(s)to see London in this short time. We will be staying at the Tower Hotel. Thanks.

Bobby G,

While in London don't miss a river trip down to Greenwich. You can catch a boat from the pier at Parliament or near the Tower of London. It takes about an hour to get there and back but the commentary along the way and the Maritime Museum and Observatory (Greenwich Mean Time and all that) are very interesting. Here's a link to the Museum's web site http://www.nmm.ac.uk/

London is an ideal City for walking. The Underground Train system (Tube) is the easiest way to get into the central area. The Tower Hotel is a few train stops from the city centre. You can could get off at Liecster Square, Picadill Circus or Tottenham Court Road and walk to many of the Museums, Galleries and attractions. A off-peak daily travel card will give you unlimited daily travel on the tube and double decker buses in the city.

Email me if you want more info.

Why is the cost of life so high in Britian, Germany and Scandinavia?

That is because they run Socialist governments. Socialism can demand up to 70% of your income, but provides free housing and medical care.

It is just a tradeoff of high taxes for high medical and housing bills.

Since the rich don't need to pay high taxes, they move to countries like Monaco, a dictatorship, or the United States, a Representative Democracy, a.k.a. a Republic.

Jesse - where do you get your information???
I live in Ontario, Canada, and I get FREE medical care, hospitalization and as a Senior, my drugs only cost me $6.11 for each prescription + $100. a year. I live in a democratic country not a socialist country.
Where did you ever get the idea that Monaco is run by a dictator?
Also, what do you mean by "the rich move to the United States". The rich move their money to the Cayman Islands!!!!

Joe & Malcolm - my daughter took the boat to Greenwich last December and said she had a great day. Was only sorry she couldn't spend more time at the College as her grandfather graduated from there way back when.

In London there is always some of interesting to do.If you love art and culture don't miss the wonderful Westminster Abbey with the royal tombs,The St.Paul Cathedral,a very intersing example of the "Neopalladiano"style. For the Museums visiti the British and the National Gallery and also the less famoous but surprising Victoria and Albert. In the nearby of London don't miss the wonderful royal castles of Hampton Court and Windsor(the royal collections of art are simply superb. They have the higher numbers of Canaletto's paintings in the world).About the Baltic sea the weather is very strange,so don't forget warm clothing(during these cruises I have seen swimningin the pool only German passengers even during sunny days). The best port of call is St.Petersburg:visit the St.Isaac Cathedral with superb russian icones, the zrarist fortress and the unforgettable Hermitage Museum in the Winter Palace. If your ship stops for two days in Russia reserve an excursion to the Pedrosvoretz Palace:it has a great park with wonderful fountains that can easily compete with the splendours of Versailles. For the shopping the most interesting thing to buy is the baltic amber avalaible in many tones of colour(from yellow to brown),but be very carefully because there are many imitations.Have an excellent cruise!

Did this cruise a few years ago. Bring good walking shoes - have them well broken in.
Here are some things to do that we enjoyed:

Stockholm - be sure to visit the Vasa Museum. It is an old ship brought up from the Baltic, very interesting.

Copenhagen- take the boat tour around the harbour and canals and be sure to go to Tivoli Gardens, especially if you are there in the evening.

St. Petersburg - be sure to visit the Hermitage ( you will not have enough time to see it all ) Pushkin, the Tsars village was intesting, and be sure to go out to Peterhof and see the the water fountains ( they are spectacular ).

Helsinki - we saw the Rock Church and that was interesting and the park with the Sabilus monument.

You'll have a great time and will be very tired by the end, but it is a great cruise.
