I've heard that Xceret is a "not miss" while in Calica or Cozumel, but what about going on the ruins hike to the pyramid? I've been to Tulum (loved it), but want to make sure my money is well spent. I've heard some recommendations to just stay on the ship in Calica and enjoy the pool! Any feedback for Cozumel would be greatly appreciated as well.

Just did this itinerary. Calica is a nothing port resembling a gravel pit. We stayed on the ship and relaxed. alot of people did Xcaret and enjoyed it. It isn't a cheap excursion. You can make up your mind at the last minute if you want, as Xcaret is about 10 minutes away from the port - you can actually see it from the ship. Excursion buses and taxis run there all day.If ruins are your thing, our ship offered trips to both Chichen itza and Coba. I went to Chichen Itza several years ago and it is definitely worth seeing.
Coba sounds good too, but is a more rugged trip as its not as developed as the other ruins. Cozumel - did snorkeling excursion on a catamaran. (I think it was the Fury). Really nice - snorkel at a reef about 45 minutes, then an hour on a great beach. Then we went to Carlos and Charlies in town for a late lunch.

Cozumel one of my favorites. We rent a vehicle and do the island in our own time. Can't get lost really cause you end up where you started. Great beaches and there are some ruins there also. People are quite friendly and don't have attitude although they still like a good bargin. Major car firms at the dock. What a great day you can have there. Enjoy!!

We were in Cozumel for the first time last October, and were very pleasantly surprised. It was beautiful and nothing at all like we imagined Mexico to be. It is an island away from the mainland and more like a caribbean island. We also rented a Jeep for the day (I think it was about $80) and explored on our own. There is only one main road that circles the island and it's very well maintained and easy to drive. If you like beaches, you should go to Playa Bonita. It's a small, rustic bar/restaurant on a beautiful stretch of beach. We spent most of the day there then finished at Carlos & Charlies. Have fun! Oh, watch your speed while driving! The police seem to be watching for American tourists speeding. We were pulled over and fined $40.

The beach is pronounced Chunk-a-knob and is a state park as mentioned above. The beaches are racked and very well maintained. The snorkeling here is among the best I've seen - exotic Fish everywhere!
