Does anyone have any first hand experience on what to bring for clothes? I feel like a person can't get away with traveling light. Sweatshirts, sweaters, formal wear etc.

I know what you mean. We are leaving tomorrow for Alaska, and we are packed everything; and I do mean everything! We return on the 4th of June. I will try to repost and let you know what was really needed.

I went last May. It never rained and I only needed a light sweater! But it could have poured...it often does, and it could have been colder! Best to pack some layers and a waterproof.

My wife always packs half a dozzen sweaters...why? Two can last a week! You need some formal wear, but pick clothes you can mix and match.

REMEMBER: most women don't ever wear 50% of what they pack!

Don't plan on using the self serve laundry on Princess ships. The people who've toured before the cruise and have a lot of dirty clothes at embarkation will occupy the equipment. I've heard of people with rooms close to the laundry complain of noise from fights all night long.

We just got back from Alaska June 4. We were very lucky and had great weather. I did wear my coat, hat and gloves in Glacier Bay and coat in Skagway. Juneau and Ketchikan were in 60's. My suggestion is this: if you are wanting to purchase Alaska sweatshirts, don't take a bunch of stuff, buy one in each port. I didn't have room in my luggage for one. Take the hat, coat and gloves in case, however.

Good suggestion re the hat and gloves, PVH and the layered clothing. Also something for rain, probably just an umbrella or a squall jacket with a hood. You will buy one or two sweatshirts from Alaska so don't take too many. It was so hot in the afternoon in Glacier Bay that I was sorry I didn't have a pair of shorts - morning was freezing. A light jacket is great with a gold shirt and sweatshirt on top. Have fun - it is magnificent.

Actually, I personally had no trouble using the self service laundry on-board the Sea Princess. I would say that one load takes about 1-hour to wash and dry. Hope this helps you in some way in figuring out how much to take. With the help of the self service laundry, I probably could've packed less...alot less!
