Have seen conflicting reports about whether a US passport is needed? Will be traveling there early next year. Has anyone been there and did you need a passport?

We are Canadians and always take our passports with us no matter where we go. Better to be safe than sorry.

It's getting to the point where you may need a passport to get back into your own country - don't leave home without it!

In agreement with all of the above. For the couple of dollars that it costs and the few minutes that it takes to apply for, the passport can certainly come in handy in case of accident or emergency.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Just a little more pro-passport discussion. We got our passports after an airline official showed concern because my birth certificate (in my maiden name, of course) didn't match my license (married name) and I hadn't brought my marriage license - for a cruise starting in Acapulco! She warned I might have problems in Mexico. I had no problem whatsoever, but it was enough of a scare to encourage us to order our passports before our Caribbean cruise last August. For that cruise and another in January, officials at the airport and on the ship were obviously pleased that we were easy to process - an airport official actually commented on how he LOVED passports! We'll finally for-sure need our passport in 3 weeks when we cruise from London, but I'm really glad we have them for all traveling. Another point is to bring several photocopies with you and put them in several pieces of luggage , etc. - "just in case" ya know. Oh, and one other thing. A couple we'd met on the web and planned to meet on that cruise from Acapulco were denied their flight because what she had was not a raised-seal "official" birth certificate but a hospital birth certificate. No one had told her exactly what she needed, and they had to fight the cruise line to be reimbursed. They got their passports right after that disappointment. Can't say I blame them!

I wrote to the French Embassy (yes, Guadeloupe is French) and was informed that a passport IS NEEDED. It is also needed for St. Martin.

Hmmm. Passport for St. Martin? We were there last January and did not need one (although we do) - many on our ship (s/s Norway) had just the usual birth certificates/photo i.d. Don't know if that's something new or if it's for people arriving at the island via airplane. But, still, a passport is always the best way to go.

In addition to a general overview of entry requirements, that edition of Cruise News had a link to the U.S. State Department web site with details about entry requirements for U.S. citizens. Click on the following link to go directly to that page: http://travel.state.gov/foreignentryreqs.html
