My husband, two children and I are going on a cruise in November. The prices for the excursions can be a little bit pricey for the 4 of us. Has anyone rented a car in San Juan? Is there enough time and how are the roads? We would like to take a trip to El Yunque rain forest and Liquillo Beach.

As sympatico told you in your other post, take the shore excursion, pricey or not. It is safer. You don't know the roads, you might not get back to the ship on time, then it would be very expensive for the 4 of you to fly to the next port, you don't know where you are going, and there is the safety aspect. Why take a chance, especially with 2 children. The excursions are not that expensive.

Do not rent your own car your first time in San Juan. Period. You will miss exits at best, and get lost at worst. Strike a deal with a driver for your family if you must, perhaps you will end up with a savings and an understandable driver. All taxis are now new in San Juan. El Yunque is lokking good, plenty of rain lately...
