Hi All,

Has anyone done the southern carrib cruise? Can you suggest what the best ports are, and the ones to stay away from? Thanks for you help!

St. Lucia is a fun port - try Reduit Beach, along beach with lots of hotels and a moderate surf beach.
Grenada is great - Grand Anse beach is the place to go and it has an interesting harbor.
Barbados is also great. Hire a cab and tour the island, you get tostay as long as you want where you want, do it with another couple and you can save a few dollars, Have the tour in the AM and have the cab driver leave you at a beach then pick you up late in the day.
Hope this helps

Who are you planning on going on a cruise in the Southern Caribbean with? This hasn't been discussed with the rest of the cruise family yet. I hope that in the future, we can discuss all plans before you go public with it. This is not the way I wanted to find out.

I was just getting info because I would like to do the Southern Carrib. I think the next one will be Panama Canal or Southern Carib. I don't which one is more expensive, so that could be a mojor factor in our decision making!

MagnumPI you are correct. Sorry sympatico, mifox79 is my brother in law. I am married to his brother! He gets a little testy when I don't ask him for his opinion first. We just took a "Family" cruise in March on the Mercury, and going on the Grand in March 00!

Thats funny I like writing on here because of the anonimity.

My wife and I do alot of internet research on our own before we discuss what we do for the next vacation whether it be for cruising or land trip. This way prices, itineraries, budget and time frame is all figured out already. After we decide, then it's back to the internet to fine tune those plans, and then we book.

Tracy... We were on the Mercury in April. We boarded Easter Sunday. How did you like Oasis? I thought they were great! I have also
been looking into a Southern Caribbean cruise. I like Celebrity's Galaxy itinerary. They go to Barbados and St.Lucia, as well as others. They are the two ports I would most like to see. I have asked a lot of cruisers, and they say those two were their favorites. I have heard good and bad things about Grenada. Some loved it and some didn't? Tell your brother in law that you are just researching for a future cruise. Maybe you shouldn't have told him your "cruise talk" name? Maybe you could change it to "My Own Buisness"

Mercy,

I went to St Lucia Oct 98 for my honeymoon at the Sandals resort. I didn't get a chance to see much of the island, put I heard that the "Pitons" are something to see! The weather was also extremely hot and humid. I am looking forward to seeing Barbados and Aruba.

Try to include Aruba as one of the islands you get to see. It gets my vote for a very interesting place--unusual and colorful homes, very friendly people, and beautiful water. I was really taken with the elaborately decorated crypts in a cemetery we saw! It was fascinating to me, and so different from anything we have in the U.S. When I travel, I like to see things that aren't like what we see here every day. :-)

My husband and I did a Southern "Exployer" cruise on the Dawn Princess last spring. The ports were Dominica, Caracas, Grenada, St. Thomas/St. John, Aruba and San Juan. I loved St.Thomas/St. John and Aruba. Very clean and safe. The natives didn't constantly hassle us, etc.. The beaches were clean, and the prettiest I've seen! Snorkeling was good, shopping was fun, etc. Personally, I didn't care much for Grenada. The natives were AWFUL! They chased after us trying to sell us tours, etc... We actually got in the middle of a fight with some natives because we chose to take one guy's water ferry over another to Grand Anse beach. It was insane! The beach was beautiful, but we couldn't go 2 minutes without someone coming up to us trying to sell us braids, t-shirts, spices, etc. They wouldn't take a firm no for an answer! I really enjoyed Dominica. It was a rain forest, and one of the natives took us around the island all day. He was great! Dominica is very different from all the other islands...it's not "touristy" at all. There are no beaches to speak of, but the scenery is beautiful with waterfalls, etc. We really enjoyed it. This is a perfect island to see on a cruise because it's not somewhere I'd want to stay for more than a day. Caracas, Venezuela (sp?)was HORRIBLE!!! It's basically a "cheap stop for fuel" for the cruise ship...it's extremely dangerous. The cruise staff actually told us to stay on the boat! There were armed guards with machine guns standing on the pier by the ship...definitely make sure any itinery you go on DOES NOT include Caracas. We just stayed on the ship and enjoyed everything going on around the pool. (Personally, I enjoy the Western itineraries better! I love Cayman and Cozumel and love all the "at sea" days because there are less ports usually on the western! Enjoy!

Agree - DON'T go to Caracas, in fact after our last trip there, when we also stayed on the ship, HAL removed the port from their itinerary. Don't remember being hassled by hawkers at Grand Anse beach, but then we took the tour with the ship. I do remember how dangerous it was getting on/off the boat that took us to the beach - they had a plank running from the boat to the beach and nothing nor anyone to help you up/down it. How about Curacao - it really is nice and the beach at the aquarium is lovely. Don't bother about seeing the aquarium - it is nothing. Barbados is great also.
Have fun.

I liked Guadalope. It seemed like there would be nothing much to do since there was not much offered by the cruise line, but I found it was my favorite. The open market was fun. Steel band playing on the street, and restraunts with side walk tables. The shops are not your normal tourist stores. I also took a tour with some people I met from the ship. We bargained the price and it was great. We had an air conditioned sports vehicle. Barbados was great also. Lots to do.

I've been on 2 southern caribbean cruises, one on the Bardados route, the other the Aruba route. The Aruba route was my favorite with Curacao being the favorite port. I found Curacao much cleaner and more colorful than Aruba and the excursions available were more fun. We had a group of 48 and I think everyone preferred Curacao.

CURACAO is definitely the island not to be missed, especially if you like to take photographs, Aruba township comes close second. Grenada is better from the water than on land.
