Am trying to organise an Alaska Cruise for 2001. We have cruised on Princess in the Caribbean and thoroughly enjoyed it. Can anyone tell me about the shore excursions available - if the air bites in the summer! - and what the weather is like - we come from England so are not use to hot summers! Any information would be gratefully received.

The driest time to travel to Alaska is May and June while the warmest months are July and August. I was there the first week in June, and the weather was perfect -- no rain with temperatures in the 50's. Ketchikan, of course, was quite overcast, but we were lucky in that it never rained -- quite unusual for Ketchikan since it rains there 364 days of the year. In June we experienced no problems with mosquitoes or bugs of any kind. Excursions can be had for nearly any physical level you want. I personally think the helicopter and floatplane excursions are the best but can be quite pricey ($180-$200 per person). The floatplane trip to Misty Fjords out of Ketchikan and the helicopter tour/landing on Mendenhall Glacier out of Juneau are especially spectacular. These sell out quickly so reserve your space as soon as possible. I didn't hear of anyone who didn't enjoy the excursions they took; i.e. wildlife viewing, bicycling, White Pass/Yukon railway, etc. Enjoy your trip!

I live on the west coast (some call it the WET coast!!) on Vancouver Island. I think you must weigh two variables. 1.The longest days are in June, the solstice being the 21 of June; so until the middle of July the days are the longest. That means that well into the evening, perhaps until 01:00, it will be daylight, making the passing scenery very visible. On an Alaskan cruise, it is probably the scenery you have journeyed to see. The later in the season, the better the chance of dry weather, August and September are the months with the least amount of rain, but the chances of morning fog does increase as September progesses. The best prices are available in May, June,
September. If you only do one excursion ashore do take the White Pass & Yukon rail trip. Also try to narrow down what it is you want to see, as there are two very different trips: a) 7 day round trip from Vancouver and b) 7 day one way between Vancouver and Alaska or vice versa. The latter are designed primarily for those doing a land tour into the interior of the state. If you are planning a tour of the Canadian Rockies (Banff, Lake Louise etc) in conjuction with your cruise then the 7 day round trip is for you. Either way a great trip, you will enjoy all of it. If you would like any more information (no I'm not in the business of selling anything) email me at:lesgrant@home.com
