We are thinking of changing our cruise, from the Grand Cayman/Cozumel itinerary( since we've been there several times) to Grand Cayman/ Calica, Mexico. Does anybody know what Calica is like? How does it compare to Cozumel?
Thank you fellow cruiser's for you valuable advise!

Calica is a rock quarry. Literally! It is the location to other places that makes it a destination at all. You can go to Xcaret,an ecological park ( 1 mile away), or take an excursion to the Myan ruins. Or an excursion to Cancun, which is what we did. It is about an hour away. Or go to Playa Del Carmen. Not very far by taxi. The people that went to Xcaret on our ship (Mercury) were happy with their choice. We had a nice day too. But VERY hot 100 degrees. We were glad we chose one where we could swim!

I really don't know about a car. But cabs are cheap! It's pretty "third world" in the country side around there. I heard that Playa Del Carmen has some nice resorts. I don't know if you can use the beach or not.

Hi Geno,

I also went on the Mercury in March 99. We went to Xcaret and loved it. There isn't really anything else to do. It really didn't look like an area where you would be able to rent a car. When we got off the ship the shuttle bus for Xcaret was waiting for us. It was also very hot. Xcaret has an underground river that you can float down and they also have beach areas where you can swim. Hope this helps!

Geno; We have spent quite a bit of time up and down the coast. All beaches in this part of Mexico are public access.
Playa del Carmen is a very friendly and safe little town with alot of little shops. This would be the closest place to rent a car. You could also take a cab to Tulum and see the Mayan ruins. You can also go to Akumal and there is a state run park that has incredible snorkeling where the fresh water runs into the sea from an underground source alot of fish. I can find the name if you want it. Xcaret is definetly a good all day trip, butterfly atrium, horse back riding, horse shows, some mayan ruins swimming, swim with the dolphins, underground river cenyote. I got a little long hope this helps a little

There are tons of things to do from Calica. Playa del Carmen is great. We spent 9 days there last year and didn't run out of things to do up and down the coast. Yalku Lagoon is the lagoon near Akumal--I'm sure all cab drivers know where it is. Akumal Bay is also a good snorkeling spot--just swim out from the beach. All beaches in Mexico are public.

Hmmm It must be me, but I found Calica a glorified zoo, with NO beaches at all, a kiddie pool of an inlet is there for all to use. You can't go into the ocean at all. VERY windy and if it was not for the birds.....not much of anything to see. My choice would be Grand Cayman, I am sorry we just did not go there for a week! Beautiful! Cozumel has nothing to see..except Carlos and Charlies....beaches murkey and crowded. Forget Playa del Sol.
We were on the Mercury in a suite, ...last time Galaxy on southern route. Much more interesting. SORRY! IMHO
