I've been watching these topics for a year and seldon see reference to the Scandinavian/Baltic ports. We will be on the Crown Princess May 21 from Copenhagen and still wonder what people think about the cruise to Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, etc. and also the shore excursions. Any comments from previous cruisers to the area would be appreciated.

Hi Skyhawk, many of the respondents to this forum are American and do not take cruises that venture as far as Europe!

Advice on European cruises and lines such as P&O and Fred Olsen are not easy to come by.

Thanks for that observation Malcolm. Disappointing news but maybe there are others that are hiding and have something to add. If there is enough interest I would be glad to report on our trip when we return the first week of June. If there are any specific questions, concerns relating to the ship, transportation to and from or excursions please let me know. We will transit London Heathrow and intend to spend an extra day in Copenhagen before boarding for a 11pm departure.

Hi Skyhawk:Noticed your post regarding Scandinavian/Baltic Ports. As we were just there two years ago on the Rotterdam VI (I was also there in 1973) perhaps we can fill you in a little bit.
Stockholm is the "Venice of the North", offers local cruises along the many waterways and canals of the City which accounts for 1/3 of Stockholm's surface area. Visit the Old Town in the center, the Great Square and the Royal Palace.
Helsinki: Take a city tour to see this beautiful city and the Esplanade, famous for shops and open-air restaurants, The Forum Shopping Mall, historic Senate Square -- or you can also just stroll into the center of Helsinki from the pier.
St.Petersburg: Although this great City's buildings and roads have disintegrated since the fall of Communism because of lack of government funding and corruption -- you stil must see the Hermitage Museum at the Winter Palace, The Pushkin Palace (former home of Catherine the Great, the Peter & Paul Fortress where St. Petersburg began.
Oslo:You can walk to center via the Plaza by pier, along the Boulevard where there are many outdoor floating restaurants--Go 2-blocks North to KRISTIAN BOULEVARD. You are then in the Centre-great for strolling, shopping, etc. Walk up Kristian Blvd. to the Slottet Palace.
Perhaps some of this info can be of help to you. By the way, I do not agree with Malcolm that not many Americans venture that far. Why does HAL have three ships in Europe this year -- and why are 3/4 of the passengers American and Canadian? We have done all of Europe by ship and will be doing two 12-day cruises from Rome/Lisbon/Copenhagen in May and June.
By the way -- you will really enjoy Copenhagen. Don't forget to go to Tivoli gardens. You probably will have a tour of Copenhagen on the way to your hotel from the ship.
Have a great cruise and look forward to your comments on return.

Hi-I also disagree with Malcolm--we have been on 7 cruises in European waters in the past 5 years and are going again in 2 weeks, and most of our shipmates have been American.
DO NOT miss a tour of the Hermitage. Your best bet is to go with the ship's shore excursion; arranging it on your own is almost impossible. If an evening of folkloric dancing is offered in St. Petersburg, it will be very rewarding. English is spoken throughout Scandinavia and somewhat understood by street vendors in Russia. We took single dollar bills for street buys in St. P. and did very well. You might consider using credit cards in other ports. Have fun--it's a fabulous itinerary!!

LizB and Winner...Excellent comments and just what I was looking for. Thanks a lot! Hope to get more comments before we leave. Picked up our documents today and we are READY to go . Our only other cruise was an Alaskan cruise about 5 years ago which we enjoyed and we are really looking forward to this one. Winner, how many one dollar bills would suffice for the St. Petersburg visit? I know that depends on what we intend to buy but, just a few low cost items is all we're interested in. BTW, what are some unique Russian items that are there? 20 days until departure but, who is counting...

Hey folks, I was not trying to upset anyone! Of course American's Cruise in Europe! I was just making the point that Europe is not always the US 'mass markets' first choice of destination.

It's nice to read some good advice. I am also thinking of taking a Baltic cruise.

Has anyone cruise with Fed Olsen?

What is the food/service and shows like on the Norwegian Dream?

BobbyG...As always the best in anything is an individual observation but, year before last my wife and I used Trafalgar tours for an England, Scotland and Wales tour. This was the first time we had tried a trip using tours and were especially pleased. Accomadations were excellent and appropriate for the region in all cases. Meals with the package were generally good with some especially good. The only thing I really remember is don't expect any more than advertised. For example, if you are supposed to get one meal a day that is all you get. Just read closely so that you know what to expect. Our guide was Liz from Ireland and she did an excellent job as well as our Scottish driver.

Malcolm, Hey no offense from here. That's what this chat is about isn't it? Thanks for your input to my questions.

Went to the Baltic three years ago. If possible go to Tivoli Gardens at night, it's great site. Lots of families, plenty of restaurants, and entertainment.
At Oslo you dock right at the edge of the city, easy walk into the city. spotless
In Stockholm, visit the Vasa Museum it is a great museum showing how ships were built.
St. Petersburg - do not miss the Hermitage Museum, you'll never have enough time to spend there, Pushkin, the Czars village was great, but the other ting not to miss is the summer palace on the bay of Finland, the water fountains were fantastic.
Talin, Estonia was really interesting.
We rate the Baltic in the top two of our 19 cruises. The only problem with the cruise is you will be really busy. If the ship goes through the Kiel Canal, get a place up top early for some great pictures.

Cosmos tours are VERY good and great value! I understand that they are up to 30% cheaper than Trafalgar! They tend to use 3 star holels, but they are always adequate and clean.

Like Trafalgar, you will only get what you pay for - but that's just what I expect! It's when I get less than I've paid for, I get very upset.

Malcolm, I agree 100 percent about getting less than I pay for. You are singing my song. I'm not familair with the "Cosmos" tours. Are they worldwide or just in the UK?

Cosmos is part of Trafalgar Tours, and as Malcolm said, offers more economic versions of Trafalgar itineraries. I did a Trafalgar tour about 5 years ago - London/Paris/Rome - and the hotels, land/sea travel, half day tours in each city, all breakfasts plus some lunches/dinners, etc. are all adequate. Tour hosts tend to try and push extra tours, though.

Insight Tours, affiliated with British Airways, is similar to Trafalgar Tours, with similar itineraries. Both are strong on British Isles/Ireland itineraries.

Did Baltic cruise with Royal Princess two years ago. Only thing I can add is that in St. Pete, our dinner table companions hired their own taxi for two days, and toured the city on their own. I don't remember the cost, but it was something like US$500 a day. So if there are 4 in the group, having your own taxi is quite worthwhile, since the bus tours are like $50 per person and up, but these last mostly 3 - 4 hours and you might go on 2 or 3 tours per day. Lastly, no need to really worry about having a lot of single dollar bills with you. First, the vendors have plenty of change for 20's, 10's, etc - their pockets are stuffed with a lot more greenbacks than you will be carrying, and the handicrafts are not that cheap. Not much can be bought for a dollar. Second, the ship's pursar will make change for you. I find the most useful notes are 10's and 20's, for tips, purchases, etc.

One final comment - the food on the Royal Princess was the best I have ever had on board a ship, especially their Italian dishes, due to maitre'd Giuseppe and his group of Italian waiter captains.

Have a good trip.

Thanks for those comments. We are expecting to do some type of Ireland tour in the future and we may look into the other tour groups. Of course we may just cruise instead. We are looking forward to the St. Petersburg visit and will probably buy a few things so your comments on the money are good for us to consider. I expected that one dollar wouldn't go far so we'll up that to $20.

As far as the ship we have been on the Regal Princess before and they have changed from Royal Princess to the Crown Princess for the Baltic trip this year. I guess we'll feel right at home. Hope our food and service is good as well.

Skyhawk ...

Sorry to come in so late on this. If you can get ahold of "Scandanavia and Baltic Europe on a Shoestring" (Lonely Planet) DO!

In Stockholm we visited the old city and loved the changing of the guard. (Don't stand too close to the horses.) Walked one way, cabbed back because I'd purchased a short ton of crystal.

Oslo is very easy to get around using public transportation. There is a stop right at the dock. And the sweaters are the same price in the pierside shop as downtown. (SHOCK!) Vigeland Park is an absolute must. Take LOTS of film and be prepared to be blown away.

In Helsinki we took (on our own) one of the local tour boats then just wandered around. Our fellow passengers thought we got the best of the day.

Copenhagen is wonderful, the Little Mermaid really is, and Tivoli is a delight for all the senses. We went both at night and during the day. You can walk Copenhagen fairly easily and the public transportation system is well-organized. There's a "travelers' rest" on the second floor of the Royal Copenhagen store.

We had Russian visas, and our St. Petersburg experience didn't mirror that of any fellow passengers. Many people were not pleased at the cost of the landside outings ... maybe they hadn't checked in advance to see how much it would cost to do everything. (A lot.)

In sum, you can easily freelance in most of the port cities and save your rubles for St. Petersburg.

If I can help in any way, please ask.

Skyhawk...The daily programme on the Royal Princess always had a 1 - 2 page summary of the next city on the itinerary, with the usual travel tips - places to see, get around, things to buy, small map, etc. The ship lectures also covered each city, and usually there was a shuttle bus to the town center. You need local currency in all the different ports, except for St. Pete, where the vendors deal in US$. The ship's library had every travel book and advisory that had ever been published.

I don't know what a Russia visa costs near you, but in Hong Kong, getting that visa was like US$100 per person. Whereas if you stick with the organized tours or agent taxis, no visa is required. Other countries on that tour do not require visas, even Poland, Estonia, Lithuania.

So, I think, no need to lug around any travel book, get local currency in advance, tell the Russkies to stick their visas in their ear, and forget the land tours, except in St. Pete.
Camera film and batteries are expensive in Europe, so bring sufficient quantity.

Still might be a bit cold there in late May, so check the weather chart.

Only a week or so until your trip. I think you are going well prepared.

PC, Thanks for those suggestions. We are just 10 days and 12 hours from home aiport departure. That is if I'm guilty of counting . One question of you though...Will we have time to read 1-2 pages in the Princess Platter every night? Looks like land tours, dinner and evening shows we'll have to make an appointment to sleep.

To everybody that responded to this topic...A BIG WEST TEXAS THANKS!...we have researched but, without a doubt most suggestions are indeed welcome. And to think this topic wouldn't fly (or float). I will continue monitoring until we leave and will post something when I get back. BTW, as you see a question presented will get answers. The next one is...Will Anybody reading this be on the same cruise?

Best Regards
