Fantatic, I've just returned from an excellent Baltic cruise. We departed from Dover and had seven ports of call, spending two days in St. Petersburg. We had four sea days which included transiting the Keil canal.
All the ports (Cities) were rather different from each other. They offered plenty of interesting things to do, including some excellent museums. I don't think I would appreciate a series of tropical islands!
Re: QE2 - I really think that it is unlikely both the QE2 and QM2 will do transatlantic trips. I think that the QE2 will be relegated to cruising, until she retires - leaving the Trans trips to QM2.
I'd love to hear your impressions of St. Peterburg! When I was there, it was in 1990, and while the city was beautiful, Soviet economic neglect had really taken its toll. We could not use the water at all, even to shower, and had to rely on an extremely limited supply of bottled water - Evian - which we had purchased earlier in Lviv, Ukraine, for all drinking and washing. Ironically, except for that, our hotel room was fairly decent, by Soviet (or, by then, collapsing Soviet) standards. It was spacious and clean. When we left, as we were going home after almost three weeks in Russia and Ukraine, to empty our suitcases we gave the maid our many extra rolls of toilet paper which we brought from the states, and she burst into tears. Imagine! I'd love to go back now, and the only way I'd do it is on a cruise, so I can return to the security (and clean water) of my cabin.
Fanatic
I can only assume that they cannot fill all there cabins at the full price???
St.Petersberg: The local generally looked reasonably well dresses. The girls all wore short black mini skirts and high heels (A very positive aspect of Capitalism! ) I suspect some folks are getting very rich as the other get poorer (the negative effect). The main streets had lots of 'designer' shops - I saw a very nice 5 star hotel (Astoria) which I looked in . However, many of the buildings still looked in need of maintanence.
Things are slowly improving - I think! It is well worth re-visiting!
