It looks like we will pass on Carib. cruise this winter and go to Venice for few weeks in Feb, hopefully around Carnival time. Dores anyone have an ideas about what are MUST SEES in Venice. We'll be there around ten days or so. also, looking for agood place to stay. Any info will help.

Venice is full of must-sees!! The obvious ones are St. Marks, the Doge's Palace and the Accademia. But there are literally hundreds of others almost as wonderful. Get any guidebook. I'm personally a big fan of the Eyewitness guides.

While in Venice, make sure you check out the many musical performances in the churches. They are extraordinary. Venice is also full of wonderful musicians.

I stayed at the Accademia Villa Maravegie and would recommend it highly, but it tends to book up early. There are an awful lot of good, but expensive, hotels in Venice.

Willy, the best attraction in Venice, is Venice itself! It's just like a movie set!

Just walking down the many narrow back streets with their hundreds of little shops, selling 'masks' is great! You can get a day pass for the water 'buses'. These allow you unlimited rides the around Venice and down the grand. It's a free river cruise and a novel way of getting around. They have numbers just like buses and there is a route map available - they are great fun, use them!

There is also a nice little maritime museum not far from St. Mark's Square.

Willy, if you manage to visit Venice during Carnival the weekends are the best time to just wander round St Marks. First weekend is quieter than 2nd. Friday evenings and Saturdays will be full of posers in fantastic costume just parading. We took costumes with us to enter into the spirit of things and budgetted for a drink in Florians (on the Square). The people parading up and down the compartments were absolutely amazing, our costumes were nothing compared to the very ornate OTT Venetians but at least we felt part of it. We even had our photo taken!! If you are in Venice over Carnival (Feb17-27 2001) there is a website for all events www.meetingeurope.com
