We are scheduled to leave in 3 weeks on the Royal Olympic Voyager going to Greece, Egypt, Turkey, and Jerusalem. Since there is fighting going on in Jerusalem I called RO to see what they are doing, and she said that's this weeks cruise was rerouted to Cyprus. I do not know anything about Cyprus except that they had their own civil war a few years back. Since there is a chance we may end up there, is there anything interesting to see?

Number one: seek shade
Number two: seek shade
Number three: avoid like the plague Larnaca Airport on a Monday
Number four: seek shade

I am only joking of course but when I was there it was extremely hot.
Pretty island though.

Paddy.

Hi Cruiselover:

Have done 4 land trips to Cyprus, and if you are going end Oct/Nov it should have cooled down a bit and will not be as hot as Paddy says, in the summer it is extremely hot, but when we were there in a November it was a nice 70’s with coolish mornings and evenings.

If you like going back in time take a trip to the Troodos mountains and visit some of the small villages, like Lefkara, Prodhomos, some are totally unspoiled. Best bet would be to hire a car, although they do drive on the left. Lefkara is where they make the lace, but although a nice village they are always touting the lace, so if you hired a car then you could just stop at any of the villages up in that area and you would see the real Cyprus.

There are of course the usual Monasteries and Churches in the interior to visit. Limassol, and Larnaca are the usual city type places and to be honest we have never spent a lot of time in them. Nicosia is the Capital which is a divided city between the Turkish/Greek Cypriots. It is quite a large island so if you will only be there a day you will have to make your choice and go by it, I doubt if you would be able to see Paphos in the West of the Island and see Troodos area as well.

It has been 7 years since we have visited so many things could have changed in that time, but I hope this has been of some help. Your best bet is to search the internet and find the Cypriot tourist boards. If you are docking in Limassol then you will not be able to go to the Far North of the island, this is the Turkish part and you would not be allowed across the border.

Cheers
M.

Good News for you Cruiselover...I am from Cyprus and would like to add some more on those (very well) said by Scottylass
Well,as it is already said, this time of the year is not usually very hot with a temperature of around 23-27 degrees Celcius during the day. The ship will dock at Limassol and from there you will be able to go sightseeing around the island. It will be good to tell us what tours are available so I will be able to tell you what each one is all about. Generally speaking if you like sightseeing you have to take a tours to Paphos (town 67km west of Limassol) and see Curioum, Apollon temple and of course the place where the God of love, Venus was born (somewhere between Limassol and Paphos.
On the other hand, if you prefer to relax you may go shopping or even go to the beach.
The destinations Scottylass refers to may be also offered as tours but I don't think that you will have a lot of extra time to rent a car and go around by yourselves.
Nothern Part: This part is under Turkish Occupation and is not a good idea to visit it since the "republic" there is not recognised by anyone as it is completely illegal, except Turkey of course. The island was divided in 1974 after a Turkish invation leading to 1619 missing people and 250 000 refugees. Unfortunately nothing has changed since then but we hope that the solution of the Cyprus problem will be reality in a few years.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Enjoy your cruise and please do come back and tell us what was it like.
