We just found out that the Millennium will only be in San Juan now from 5pm until 10! We were originally supposed to be there at 1pm. It will be dark! Is anything still open? The fort, the rum factory, shops in old San Juan? Forget the rain forest

Mercy - I don't think so, at least not the Fort or Bacardi's. As you said it will be dark by the time you get off the ship, and the Fort is the last place I would want to go to. Maybe check to see if they have websites and if hours are listed.
The stores opened at 10am when we were there a couple of weeks ago and may be open if ships are in port.
Sorry I can't help you more.

Just talked to my TA, who just came back from San Juan and she said she would never walk around at night - lots of crime down there and I do remember on one of our cruises that a couple of pax from our ship were mugged not far from the pier. Go in a group if you are going to wander the streets - don't go alone or just 2 of you.

Mercy - if the ship offers a tour, and you really want to go ashore, I'd take it - otherwise, stay on board! No way would I want to wander alone or as a couple.

The dock is very near Old San Juan. The town is worth walking around and is well policed at night. It has lots of restaurants.

The alternative is to go to a casino.

Thanks everyone! We are seriously thinking about having dinner off the ship. It's the only way we will have time to see anything. We have late seating dinner. We are considering, taking a taxi to a hotel/casino and then having dinner at the Pelican Dumas. It a restaurant over the water . I read that it is on Celebrity's Gourmet program. We are supposed to get some sort of discount there? We will be saving a lot of money on the shore excursions we will now not take in Nassau, San Juan and Catalina Island!

Smart idea Mercy - take the taxi to a hotel for dinner and a taxi back to the ship. I don't agree with WJC - the people off our ship were mugged right near the pier. In Old San Juan all the stores have iron bars on the windows and doors - they were opening these as we walked up the street in OSJ, where we were staying. I didn't see one policeman around. On our drive in from the airport every apartment and house we saw had iron bars on the windows and doors. My TA spent New Year's week down there visiting a friend and she said crime was rampant and they had 700 murders last year.
Be safe don't be sorry.

If you want to eat off of the ship I can make two reataurant recommendations:

1. Mortons of Chicago has just opened (mid-October) at the Caribe Hilton Hotel - very near the dock. I had dinner there in early November and if you want steak or lobster it can't be beat. (It is however expensiver.)
(Note there is also a Ruths Chris Steakhouse at the El San Juan. I haven't tried it personally, but have been to a number of Ruths' Chris and they are also excellent.)

2. If you like Indian food the best Indian food I have ever had is at Tantra in Old San Juan. (I love Indian food and have eaten at
Chutney Mary, Viraswamy and Les Porte des Indes in London, Bombay Grill in Washington, and every good Indian Restaurant in Manhattan.) I would describe it as nouvelle Indian - as opposed to traditional. It is Indian food prepared by a professionally trained chef.
Tantra is however not cheap either although about 2/3 the cost of Mortons.

Hi - have dinner and take in the casino - or the other way around - ship tour or taxi from and to theship for sure - those iron bars are there for a reason - like sympatico says
'better safe than sorry' - you might even win a bundle!!

Have fun

Not many shops open. Don't waste you time in Old San Juan at that time.

We did an excursion to some show with dancers. It was okay, but we wouldn't get off the ship at that hour on San Juan anymore.

The first time we were in San Juan, back in '82, we also went to a show with "topless skaters". We howled every time they twirled!!!!

Oh dear! Topless skaters? I better not let my husband read this! He will be trying to find out where?
It looks like we might have more time in port after all. The last cruise on the Millie got there at 3 pm. Not much better. I don't know if any excursions will be going or not? I guess we will find out soon. We will be there on the 23rd. Thanks!
M.
