Has anyone checked out the ships available for cruising in Hawaii? We just got a NCL flyer that states their ship, Leo, from the Orient Line will begin sailing in 12/01.

I have been looking at a Hawaii cruise for sometime now and have put a group cruise together for February 2002. The NCL Leo was a part of the original planning when deciding on what ship to take. There was limited ship availability for the particular time; the Independence, the Patriot, NCL Leo and RCI Vision of the Seas. Price wise I think NCL beat out the Independence and the Patriot, plus it was a much newer ship. The Independence is very old, 1950s vintage and the Patriot's initial sailings were less than remarkable, with many complaints. In the final analysis, we are able to sail a 10 day on the Vision from Ensenada to Hawaii, for less money than any of the other cruise lines wanted for their 7 day. I've sailed on the RCI Rhapsody of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas, both sister ships to the Vision. These are very beautiful ships with good food and service. This was a no brainer.

Other ships sail at other times, but in February, these ships were all that were available.

Both of American Classic Voyages' offerings, that is American Hawaii and the "new" United States Line have two for one price offerings now. The nice thing about these are the discounted fares but also they offer week long cruises to the Hawaiian Islands without any detour to another country to satisfy the Jones Law.

The S.S.INDEPENDENCE is a classic with a 50 year history behind her. The PATRIOT is the new girl on the block, and right now she is having some teething problems. I'm going on the INDY soon and can't wait!

Sylvia, my husband and I were on the Vision in September from Vancouver to Oahu. It was a 10 night trip that we extended with a 2 night stay at the Kahala Mandarin in Oahu. We had a fabulous time! The ship was wonderful. I had no complaints and would certaily take this trip again. We booked a standard outside cabin and were quite pleased with it. We felt that the price was very reasonable for a trip of this length. My travel agent suggested not to go on American Hawaii due to the age and number of problems on that ship. Please feel free to email me at johbud@carr.org with any specific questions.

When I took the cruise a few years back we over and cruised back to Vancouver. It was great. As someone mentioned the RCL ship going there are great. I have sailed on the Vision and Rhapsody they are wonderful. The Patriot was a very nice ship when I sailed on it in 84 and 87. I assume that the new owners will get the bugs out. Built in 1982 it not an old ship.
When we took the trip we got together with another couple and rented a car at each port. We had gotten lists of where the tours were going and picked the best of each and had time to do some freelancing as well.

My two experiences on NCL (both during 2000) and my recent one on the S.S. INDEPENDENCE scream INDY!, INDY!, INDY! The food, entertainment and service were far superior on the INDEPENDENCE as opposed to the S.S. NORWAY or M.V. NORWEGIAN WIND.

Sylvia...

Wife and I are going on 12 day Hawaiian cruise on Carnival Spirit 9/26 - 10/8 this year. She's suppose to make her maiden voyage sometime this month, so hopefully that gives them enough time to work out the bugs before we go.

Ship sails out of Vancouver (it also does a reverse Honolulu - Vancouver too and I believe next year, she's doing a Hawaii - Ensenada cruise? Not quite sure.), so you can either do 4 1/2 days at sea in the beginning or the end. We chose the beginning as we also are staying a couple extra days after the cruise.

FYI...Carnival did not offer any pre or post cruise packages as part of this particular cruise...actually my travel agent said they didn't offer any on any of their Hawaiian cruises. We booked hotel on Waikiki beach through travel agent and booked our Vancouver hotel on our own (we're flying in a day ahead of sailing and travel agent had a 2 day booking minimum).

While we did have to pay an additional deviation fee of $35 each for changing our flight schedule, we did luck out as the travel agent said it could have been that and more if Carnival didn't have available flights with the airlines they do business with for our particular schedule and because there were no pre and post cruise packages. But we booked so far ahead, that we didn't run into a problem.

This is our first trip to Hawaii, so we'd be interested to hear any veteran Hawaii traveler's recommendations on where to go and what to do. Ports of call are...Kona-Kailua, Maui, Kauai and Honolulu...please see the posting on page 1 of this forum.. "Billybob...Who can tell me about Hawaii".

If you go...have a fabulous time and please do a review.

Billybob
