The Mercury goes to Tortola, British Virgin Islands, on their Eastern Caribbean cruise in March (instead of St.Thomas). Has anyone been there? What is there to do there? Best Beach?

Mercy - I was there a number of years ago while on the Westerdam. Had a friend living there so she picked us up and drove us all around. We went to a beach to snorkel, but the water was very rough and the red flags were out.
She took us to a lovely spot where all the sailboats are moored - it was in a cove and so pretty. There is a bar there and they serve a very potent drink made from Pusser's Rum - wish I could remember the name of it. If I can find the pictures we took I may have the name on the back.
Some nice little shops in the town, but other than than nothing really there. Had a good lunch at some outdoor place, but again don't know the name. Will try and hunt for it.

Beaches are a passion for me. Like Italian Cruiser my favourite beach by far is Cane Garden Bay. It is a 10 minute cab ride from the cruise ship dock or tender station, should your ship be anchored. There are plenty of taxis so one does not feel isolated nor trapped as sailing time closes in. Owing to it's sout west facing shoreline, late mornings and afternoons are better than early mornings. Quite clean and usually free of vendors or others interupting your peace.

Thanks so much everyone! Looking at the pictures, I think I will like Tortola. We will be there the first week of March. My Mother and a co worker and I are sharing a cabin on the Mercury. I think I will suggest to my Mom that she should try a Painkiller

We went to Tortola a few years ago. It is nothing like St. Thomas, much less hectic. A pleasant port. Some shops in town. Mostly small Mom & Pop variety. Pussers is very strong. Be careful.

My wife went snorkeling at the Baths at Virgin Gorda ( forty minute boat ride from the ship ) on a tour from the ship. She said it was very worthwhile and quite interesting.

Just a point of reference for ur opinions, we are over fifty years old.

Enjoy

hi Diane, yes we will be cruising again next month, on the Atlantica back to back cruises, we just booked the Veendam for the new years cruise, its changed its itinerary and now leaves from FtLauderdale instead of PR. I had our next cruise booked a long time ago or I wouldn`t be veering away from HAL. IMHO its the only line to cruise with, especially after reading about all these free style cruises and tips paid up front, whatever is cruising coming to!! jean

jean elmore... we were on the Millennium last month, and the Costa Atlantica followed us a lot of the way. We were in port with her in San Juan and Fort Lauderdale. Very pretty ship! The pool deck looked really nice.

Cane Garden Bay is very pretty. One other institution on Tortola - Bomba's Surfside Shack!!! I am not a party animal, but that place is interesting!! ;-) Several interesting cocktails. Enjoy Tortola, and if you have a chance, check out the Baths at Virgin Gorda. Very Beautiful!
