Has anyone stayed at the Surfcomber Hotel, Miami Beech?

What's it like? Big? What's the Dinning like?

Anything of interest nearby, apart from the sand and sea?

Malcolm,

Try Surfcomber.com

I checked out this site. It has a couple of pictures. It appears it is a restored building. It is a DoubleTree hotel which is owned by Hilton. There are lots of restored art deco hotels in South Beach.

When we cruised out of Miami we always went to breakfast at South Beach.
South Beach is great for people watching. Lots of action along the main strip, shops ($$$), outdoor bars, (I recall one bar at a pool that was right off the sidewalk), and lots of outdoor cafes with good food.

Bay Side is better for shopping. There are shops and restaurants. It sits across the causeway from Dodge Pier where the ships docks.

Gizmo, can you name any particularly good places for breakfast?

Anyone stayed at the Beachcomber?

Malcolm,

Sorry, but it has been a couple of years. Even the last time we were there, neither my husband or myself remembered the name , but we drove down that main stip to find it. They had sidewalk tables, and tables on a porch along with indoor tables. We also sat on the porch so we could people watch.

Malcolm - restaurants in Florida change as often as you change your socks & underwear, providing you do it every day! There are there one day and gone the next. We would find a great restaurant one year and when we went back,it was gone. There are chains, like Denny's, and they will always be there.
No word on St. John's yet. One neighbour said to go to Signal Hill - a historic site where Marconi made the first Trans-Atlantic call. She said it was a good walk from the pier.

Malcolm,

I did a search on Surfcomber on another site and found a couple of post on this hotel.
#1
If you have Hilton HHnor Points to redeem, I would suggest The Double Surfcomber Hotel @ Collins Ave. & 17th St. It's a wonderfully renovated art-deco hotel that has a large swimming pool and direct beach access. It sits among some of South Beaches most trendy hotels - The Delano and The National are it's neighbors.
Another Hilton Property on South beach is The Hilton Grand Vacations Club on Ocean Drive @ 14th St. Totally differnt scale than the Surfcomber, they are recently renovated 1/2bedrm suites with modern Italian furniture. The units are in 3 low-rise are deco hotels that have been joined together.

#2
We usually arrange to arrive at the embarkation city a day before departure, and this cruise was no exception. Through NCL, we booked an evening at the Doubletree Surfcomber in the South Beach section of Miami. The hotel had a lovely pool area, and our room was small, but comfortable. The on-site restaurant was expensive, but quite good, although we opted for the nearby Burger King for breakfast the following morning. The hotel itself wasn’t worth the cost, but being able to board the ship early was. We took a taxi to the pier at 11:00 am, preferring not to wait the additional two hours for our pre-paid transfer.
#3
We stayed at the Surfcomber (a double tree hotel) the rate was $148 and it was a special. It was a very interesting "period" hotel. Very much the 20 & 30's deco look. Huge pool and huge beach area with a lot of beach toy's included. South Beach on the beach is pricey.
#4
This year we decided to say in South Beach and found a wonderful hotel Surfcomber for $189. It is right on the beach and in a prime spot. We wanted to walk around and have a nice dinner and see some of the "sights"!!! There is really nothing near the Sheraton unless you take a cab to the nearby mall (can't remember the name) that has shopping and restaurants.

Here are a couple of links I found. http://www.hotelsupermarket.com/usa/florida/miamibeachsouthartdeco.htm http://www.miami.com/c/travel_and_visitors/places/miami/accommodations.htm#sobe.htm http://miami.hotel-discount.org/

There is alot of info on this site about hotels in Miami. If you would like the address email me. (Then again you may already know it)

Hey Malcolm! I am glad to be able to help you out with this one! I stayed at the Surfcomber this past June before embarking on the Voyager. The location is very convinient for walking to Lincoln Road Mall and to Ocean Drive and the hotel is right on the beach. It is about 10-12 blocks to get to the 700 block of Ocean Drive, but I love walking. It is safe to walk until late at night and there are usually lots of tourist around, but the homeless people also start to come out late at night. But no one bothered us and I had no fear of crime whatsoever.

Don't bother with a rental car. Parking in South Beach can be next to impossible!

I love getting up early in the morning and enjoying a walk on Miami Beach. The hotel lobby is nice, but not fancy. The pool is pretty.

Got a very good discount at hoteldiscounts.com - three people in a room for $119 US plus tax. Actually they messed up the booking and gave us two rooms for the price of one! As for the rooms, they were clean and designed ok, but not worth a very high price. Plus they charge you an additional "Resort Fee" for use of beach chairs, etc. The fee is $7 US
I don't know if you have a price limit, but a really nice hotel is the Loew's Miami Beach. Got a fab deal on it the summer of 2000 for $150 US.
The best thing to do is start booking early. Miami is a very hot destination and we were lucky to get a room since when we went in June, there was a hugh music concert, several fashion houses were in there for fashion shoots, and Tom Joiner, a famous radio personallity had just come back from a charity cruise, so South Beach hotels were practically booked solid. Winter hotel rates in Miami are much higher than summer.

As far as eating - very nice resturants but expensive unless you eat at the fast food resturants. On Saturday nights, great live Salsa music all along Ocean Drive. Gloria Estefan has a resturant that has great music and beautiful views, but Cuban food tends to be mild for my tastes - I love very spicy food.
For shopping, Bayside Marketplace tends to be the typical American Mall experience, but they have lots of great ecclectic shops on Lincoln Road in on Collins Ave and Ocean Drive.

Hornblower - think you are too late with your post to Malcolm. Believe he is on the ship now and unless they have a cyber cafe on the ship, he won't be able to check your post. Believe he left yesterday.
