We're on the NCL Sun 10/22. Taking elderly dad w/emphesema. Would like 'must-see' spots on our itinerary. We generally prefer to get off ship and arrange our own activities, but with Dad not able to walk, wonder what would be available for us. Any ideas out there, thanks, Pam.

Pam - what are your ports? That would help answer your question.
Weather can be quite cool by the end of October in Canada/New England, and possibly raining, so make sure you take some warm clothes and an umbrella.

Sorry, overlooked the specific 'port' thing. They're Boston, Bar Harbor, Sydney NS, Corner Brook, Quebec and Halifax. We're from eastern Washington state, so weather is similar. and yes, normally we would be heading somewhere, oh say, a bit more tropical, but my dear ole dad has always wanted to do this trip, and, well, he's paying, so No. New England, here we come. Thanks for any tips.

I can give you some nformation on Boston and Quebec City. Unforunately, to enjoy both cities you do need to walk. In Boston you can take the Freedom Trail with tours leading from the Old State House near Fanieul Hall Markets. The Aquarium is close by, Fanueil Hall, the old North end ( italian section with good restaurants), Boston Common and the Public Garden, and the State House are all nearby in walking distance. You could try one of the trolley tours that have unlimited off and on at many stops or a guided tour of the city. Downtown Boston is at least a 30 minute walk from the Black Falcon pier.
In Quebec city the lower town is just a few minutes from the pier and the upper town can be reached using the funicular. Douffin Terrace has great views and there are chairs for sitting. The Terrace is around the Chateau Frontenac and that is worth going in for a drink and seeing. Again you may want to take a tour because many of the places take time to walk to.
Isle D'Orleans is about thirty minutes north of Quebec city and is a pleasant way to spend a day on the island tour. You will need a car to tour the island.

Hope this helps and have fun. We live near Boston and go to Quebec every other year. It is one of our favorite places to visit.

Re Halifax - there is a lot of walking and it is a very hilly city, so not good for dear old Dad and walking. I would suggest taking a tour, but not to Peggy's Cove - everyone has told me to look at a post card and that is exactly what I will see. Last time we were there, I just took the shuttle bus over to the Heritage stores, walked around and shopped. My husband with the "walking" bit up to the Citadel. If you are taking Dad, take an excurion that doesn't require much walking, or grab a taxi, tell the driver you want a tour, and I am sure he will oblige you.
In Sydney we went to Bedec (the home of Alexander Graham Bell) as our tour on the Cabot Trail was cancelled, due to the fact that the seas were heavy and we could not tender. This was a very nice scenery tour and your Dad may like it.
Never been to Corner Brook, but don't think there is much there. St. John's is the Capital of Newfoundland. Will ask my neighbour as she used to live in CB.

hope you will find the weather hospitable. i would encourage you to use a wheelchair. they can be rented for very little money and would be helpful from the airport to getting around the ship. cruised a large boat to alaska and just the walking around the ship limited my ability to get off and explore. am arthritic and just ran out of steam. boston should be pretty accessible. the waterfront area and fanueil hall are full of construction from the big dig but we were there recently and there are provisions for pedestrians. don't miss the DUCK tours. they leave from the prudential center and are very engaging and entertaining-ending up in the charles! they are amphibious vehicles from ww2. don't think they are wheelchair worthy but it sounds like dad just can't walk much at one time. the boston chamber of commerce probably could steer you to info. for the handicapped getting around. rainy day? there is a very nice aquarium that i would love to visit without children.the fine arts museum is not too daunting and there are penty of great restaurants and taxis. have a great trip.searose

Welcom aboard Searose. You obviously did not understand the "Location" section of your Profile when registering, as you have put down "don't understand" in this space. What Joe means is "where do you live - what city or state". You can go back and edit your Profile - had a chuckle when I read that you were from "don't understand" - that was a new one to me.

Hi...this summer I've had to start using a wheelchair to get around and I've found that using the wheelchair Taxis is very convenient indeed. I would expect that you could get a reservation for one in most places and they charge the same as a regular one. Get on to Google and find the cab companies and call/E-mail them.
