Anyone familiar with Manta, Salaverry and callao ?

Having been to both Manta and Callao I would suggest you take a shore excursion through the ship. In Callao you could take the shore excursion into Lima (and possibly include Meriflores). It is a nice shore excursion. The port cities don't have too much to offer so you are better to take a shore excursion than try to do it on your own. Also, Lima can be somewhat dangerous on your own.

Neviboy...we have never been to either Salaverry or Trujillo.

We have been to Callao twice. The first time we took the ship's tour to Lima and the bus had a police escort the whole way. The second time there was no police escort, but we were glad we were with the tour group from the ship. The tour operators for the ship's tours are very reliable...have no idea if you did a tour on your own how they would be, but I would feel safer going thru the ship.

In Ecuador (Manly) we did an all-day tour thru the rice fields to a banana plantation where we also enjoyed lunch. actually, I never knew hey grew so much rice and was quite surprised.
