I posted a similar question to this in the cruise ship forum, but I wanted to get any feedback I could on Old San Juan. We're going to be in Old San Juan the day before our Cruise on Celebrity's Infinity departs. We'll be staying over at the Wyndham Old San Juan, right across from the cruise terminal. Has anyone else stayed in this hotel and could give me a quick review? Also how is the nightlife in Old San Juan? Is it safe? Are there lots of restuarants and bars/nightclubs within walking distance of the Wyndham? Any feedback from past experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Mike

We stayed at the Wyndham Old San Juan before our Christmas cruise in 2000. Personally, I did not like it and was very disappointed. Front desk staff were rude, the room faced the back of the hotel where they were constructing a garage - workmen woke us up at 5am with their banging - this after we had a very early flight in the wee hours of the morning from Toronto to San Juan the previous day. That night we were kept awake by music blaring from a Christmas party 3-4 floors below us which didn't end until midnight and then to be woken up after 5 hours of sleep was not appreciated. When we phoned down to the Front Desk about the 5am noise, they said "sorry - nothing we can do - we had an agreement with the construction company to not start before 7am, but it is out of our hands." No compensation given for our troubles. I will never stay there again, in fact, I will never fly in/out of San Juan again. The airport was horrible, food terrible and very expensive. Thank goodness HAL has pulled out of there as a Homeport.
Maybe you will have better luck.
Can't help you with restaurants, night life, etc., but I don't think it is safe to wander the streets at night.

We flew into San Juan a couple of years ago. Stayed at a hotel in the Condado area, can't remember the rest of the name. It was a short taxi ride from the dock area. Very nice hotel. We walked all over San Juan during the day, but not at night. We took a cab to El Moro (the fort) and then walked down to the dock area. We went to the San Juan Gate, several museums, the San Juan Church. We have been there three times and would go back in a second if I had the chance. Enjoy.

We stayed one night between cruise at the Wyndham Old San Juan and were underimpressed. We arrived there about 11:30 after disembarcing the Radiance and were told at the desk that our cabin had been cancelled, that they had received a fax to that effect. We certainly had not cancelled and stood firm. The goofy girl at the desk went to the manager who agreed to give us a room. We were told we couldn't check in until 3pm but were able to leave our bags there. They never mentioned we could relax at the rooftop pool and wait (which would have been nice.) We wandered around Old San Juan until 3 and returned to the hotel where we were given a really bad room overlooking a brick wall. No view in any direction. We hadn't paid for this room, it was complimentary from Royal Caribbean so we didn't complain. The next morning upon awaking we found a bill stuck in our door for the night. They had insisted on a charge account number so we had been charged. We went to the front desk and asked to see the manager. He ripped up the bill.
The only things positive I can say about the hotel is it was in a great location and it the room was clean. Also, on Saturday night there is an excellent Spanish group performing in the plaza outside the hotel. We enjoyed them very much and the drinks were great. I hope you have checked on where your ship is leaving because some of the lines are leaving from the new pier which is a 10 minute taxi ride away.
