We are cruising over the 4 of July weekend and visiting Halifax. My wife would like to visit a beach. Does anyone know how far from the port a nice beach is? We have never been there so we don't know anything about Halifax. What are some of your favorite things to do?

Halifax is on the Atlantic Ocean and I think the water will be too cold for swimming, if that is what your wife is looking for, especially as they have had a very cold, rainy spring. It's not like swimming in the ocean while in Bermuda.

Try this web site http://www.halifaxinfo.com/
and click on Recreation and Outdoors. Most people do not look for beaches while in Halifax, but do one of the site seeing tours. You would have to rent a car and then try and find your way to one of the beaches mentioned in the Halifax web site.

The last time we were there, my husband walked up to the Citadel (very hilly city) and I went to the Heritage stores down by the docks and did some shopping.

Check out the excursions that your ship may offer. This would be one of your best bets if you have never been to the city.

Good place for lunch is Saltys down by the water.

Thank you sympatico for the info. No she wasn't planning on swimming just hanging out. Our weather down here has been the same also. I did read somewhere that it was in the 90' on a 4th of July weekend a year or so ago. Thanks again for the ideas.

If you are walkers, there is a large park east of the cruise terminal that fronts on the ocean - perhaps a 15 - 20 minute walk to the entrance. When I visited Halifax a couple of years ago, I found a couple of very nice spots looking out on the sea and, for sharp eyes, there are whales offshore...for other options, the heritage section of town is wonderful, and the maritime museum excellent if you enjoy that sort of thing. .. and if you want to get out of town on a tour, Peggy's Cove is a Canadian icon, and Lunenberg a heritage treat...back in town, find a local pub, order an Alexander Keith's and enjoy! You'd have to work at not enjoying Halifix.
