Weird question.. but we have to get a cab from the NYPST to the hotel. Do they have mpv sized ones, ie big enough for 4 plus baggage? or will we end up having to get 2?

Hi Pam,

Most NYC cabs are the Ford Crown Victoria. www.fordusa.com One passenger in front, 3 adults in the back. The boot is pretty large. It is called a 3 body trunk. Movies have been made about the misadventures and driving habits of NYC cabbies.

The Honda minivan taxis never quite took off.

Either way, wait in the line and the dispacher will put you in the right cab and decide if you need 2 cabs. On the street, NYC cabbies drive away from people with lotsa luggage.

I will be in NYC in late April and May for different affairs.

Thank you Desirod. I have seen the yellow cabs portrayed in the movies many a time, but reality is always different, thank goodness!
If I were a driver I too would ignore those with loads of luggage, I'd have to get out my seat and open the boot/trunk
Anyhow, we'll leave it up to them. Probably annoying for the drivers too as it's not exactly very far to go either, just not walking with luggage distance.

Pam -

You should also be aware that the cab rank and system at the pier in New York is chaotic - so bad, in fact, that the last two times we have been there we have walked over to Eleventh Avenue to pick up a cab on the street. With the amount of baggae you have, you might want to use Cunard's (horribly overpriced) White Star limo service!

For $180 we decided to give that a miss and put up with the chaos.

Geez! They used to offer a free shuttle bus to Penn and Grand Central Stations. Of course you had to book it in advance and be able to handle all your luggage since it left the pier 2 hours after docking and didn't wait for stragglers.

Off topic a bit, but Cunard need to think about the quality of their onshore arrangements. Comment above - $180 for land transfer - we sailed from Soton last summer, stayed o/night before at the Hilton. The buses used for the transfers were shameful ... decrepit old things, looked like something that should have been scrapped years ago. And the room, standard rate abt £65, Cunard special, incl transfers and parking, £160. Hmm

There is always van service by SuperShuttle and a few others from the airports to the PST. They also can pick up at the PST if you call ahead of time. You do share the van with 10 other people.

Problem: In order to make life difficult and inconvenience their customers; The Port Authoritarian of New York and New Jersey has removed most payphones from the terminal and the wait to get to one is terminal. I have no idea if a British cell phone will work in the USA, my American one will not in Europe.

Thanks Desirod, I sent SuperShuttle an email, the response:-
"We normally service the airports only. If we take guests to other locations it would be considered a charter at a min of $103.50 to start."
All seems quite ludicrous for 10 blocks or so, the run to the airport is half the price and much further away. We have a phone which works in the US, so no problem there, just no-one to ring at present... we'll still be standing at the taxi rank. Can always leave MrP there with luggage and walk ourselves I am not bothered, no big deal, just take it as it comes. Cunard will chuck us off as early as possible as there are lunches and tours aboard.

Might your hotel be able to line something up for you, for less money than Super Shuttle and less hassle than a cab?

Whether or not walking is advisable depends what direction your hotel is from the PST. A policeman at the pier told me I was crazy to walk from the PST to my hotel when I asked for some directions, not because of the distance involved (a mere 21 blocks) but because of the neighbourhoods I would have to walk through. I walked anyways and I am still here 26 years later.

What hotel will you be staying at?

Brian

Well, we're [kids & myself lugging Mr's suits] are back. What a trip! Nothing will/can ever surpass that crossing.
Onboard, Cunard wanted even more money for the transfers! $49 each! Anyway, we joined the melee for the taxis wondering if we had made the right decision. It looked chaotic to say the least, but glad to say the system works well, and in a taxi and off within 20 minutes. The boot/trunk was large enough for all our bags and it cost the princely sum of $5 + tip. Sure glad we didn't fork out nearly $200 + tip.

As to the cab.. well, it had seen better days Driver sat reading his paper at each set of lights, not noticing the traffic moving once. All 4 of us sat in the back as he couldn't be bothered to move his bag in the front. No seatbelts. Miserable blighter too.

But we went in a number during the time in NYC, so cheap compared to here, even with tipping the 'bellboys' to get you one; they don't seem to mind rushing out into the middle of the road to stop a cab for you, then the traffic while you run across and jump in! Saves a lot of time faffing about with buses/subway etc when time is short. We certainly had 'fun' speeding at 80mph+ through red lights, squeezing out other vehicles, while the cabbie camly tells us there are few if any accidents in yellow cabs... only to see one the following morning booted up the rear end, trunk open, abandoned for an hour until it could be moved.. we had fun, pity we couldn't have stayed longer.

What a view from the hotel, from the room down Broadway to Times Square, and out the elevator lobby area QM2! Weird feeling, still swaying at sea, 21 floors up!

Pam... hating being back here

Hello,
it is good reading about your adventures in New York, and that all went well with the taxis.

Sometimes these very banal practicalities get forgotten when preparing a voyage.µ

Still 5USD compared to 2OOUSD... there is an unaccountable difference here.

Welcome Home Pam. Aren't NY taxis fun!! A few years back a group of us were in a van and I was elected to sit up front with the driver. He hit a bicycle courrier - I nearly flipped out - the guy jumpedup from the roadway, shook his fist at the driver and we all sped away. It's a nightmare.

I am paying $54Cn, each way for HAL transfer to and from LaGuardia. Highway robbery. I can get a Limo for that price from home to the airport, in fact even less ($50.00 w. tip). I was going to take a cab to the airport then was warned that the lines would be long - originally I had an early flight - now it's not until 3:30pm, so I could have made it.

Sorry you didn't meet Anne in the Library. She must be home or else she quit the job.
