Port shortens timeline on cruise terminalCopyright 2004 Houston Chronicle
With larger ships on the horizon, the Port of Houston Authority is speeding construction of the cruise terminal at Bayport, with a new goal of having it ready in 2007.
The port commission on Monday approved a $3.6 million change to the contract awarded to Zachry Construction for the first phase of Bayport.
That move, which involves dredging, will bring the cruise terminal on line about a year faster, according to Tom Kornegay, executive director of the port.
The first phase of the Bayport container and cruise terminal is to be completed in 2006, but the cruise portion of the terminal wasn't scheduled to come on line until 2008.
Norwegian Cruise Line, which resumed sailing weekly out of the Port of Houston last fall, wants a larger vessel to sail out of Houston next year, port officials said.
The cruise ship currently sailing from Houston has a capacity of about 1,600, they said. The new ship can hold more than 1,800 people.
The port's current cruise facility at Barbours Cut could have difficulty accommodating the increased number of passengers, Kornegay said.

1600 would be the Sea, 1800 would mean it's going to be replaced by the Wind or the Dream?
