500 cruise liners to Copenhagen
December 29, 2004

With 264 cruise liners with 320,000 passengers calling at the Port of Copenhagen it is Northern Europe’s largest cruise destination. Moreover, last November, Copenhagen was appointed Europe’s leading cruise destination before among others Genova and Barcelona.

Since 1998, cruise liner tourism has increased of 11 percent per year, which is much more than tourism internationally that has had a yearly growth of 6.8 pct.

The success is not least due to a targeted development of the cruise product by Cruise Copenhagen Network, created by among others the tourist organisation Wonderful Copenhagen, the Copenhagen Malmö Port and Copenhagen Airport.

And with a targeted strategy according to which infrastructure and terminal capacity will be further developed, the network aims to continue its previous growth and achieve 600,000 cruise liner tourists and 500 calls in 2010.

”At this time, 286 cruise liners are enrolled to call at Copenhagen in 2005, and we believe that we can realize continued growth and success, “ states the Chairman of Cruise Copenhagen Network, general manager for Copenhagen Malmö Port, Per Schmidt to Berlingske Tidende.

Copenhagen Capacity

On average that will be more than one ship per day... what a great place for cruise ship spotting!!

Copenhagen is a beautiful city. I spent a summer in Denmark going to school. My last visit was 1994 with Holland in the same trip.

Copenhagen nieghborhoods to see are

Christianhaven
Free City of Christiania [smoke the reefer inside the city walls]
Kongeshaven
Nynhavn [a bit pricey now]
Stroget
Botanic Garden
Tivoli Gardens
Radhusplasen

The city has wonderful museums and known for Jazz.

There is a vibrant Gay and Lesbian scene.

The North side of the city is from the late 19th Century with beveled building corners for fire trucks to get through.

The South side has the 18th Century and older buildings.

There is too much to see only in one day.

There is also the Carlsberg Brewery to visit.

Christiana Free City is undergoing a crackdown, and, I think, won't last very long anymore (according to newspapers i read recently)

The femous little Mermaid is a bit of a disappointment as she is really very very"little" . Very recently she was clad in a burqa by protesters.

The Amalienborg Palace near the (then) passengership quays is interesting, but even more is the Rosenborg Palace, with the Danish Crown Jewels.

Yes, Copenhagen is a good place to see many cruiseships every summer. Here is a link to a list of visiting ships for the 2005 season.

http://www.tv.cphport.dk/coins/KbhHavn.nsf/anloebCruiseAll?openAgent&year=2005

Could be nice to meet some of you in Copenhagen.
I live only half an hours driving from there in direktion North.

Sincerely René.

Sorry for the wrong spelling.

And don't forget to take one of those free bikes, which you can borrow for 20 Kroner. You can go through the whole city, and take coffee, lunch, beer anywhere. Boat-cafes, etc.
Henri.
