Full Steam Ahead For Cruise Terminal
February 17, 2005

Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, yesterday signalled it was full steam ahead for Brisbane's first dedicated cruise ship terminal when he turned the sod to officially start construction.

The terminal will be developed by Multiplex as the centrepiece of its A$350-million Portside Wharf at Hamilton.

Mr Beattie said the terminal was expected to start operations early next year and be able to host ships up to 270m in length, including navy vessels and super yachts.

"This is a significant achievement for Queensland and shows that partnerships between the Government and the private sector for major infrastructure can deliver real benefits for Queensland," he said.

"The State's first purpose-built cruise terminal marks the start of a sustainable cruise shipping industry in Queensland and will provide a significant boost to our economy - about A$100-million during construction and A$53-million a year during operation.

"Queensland attracts 70% of all cruise ships that come to Australia, yet we have no dedicated terminal for passengers to disembark.

"From next year we will be able to greet international visitors properly and show them that Brisbane is truly an international city."

Brisbane’s present cruise wharf at Brisbane Bulk Sugar requires cruise ships to pass under the Gateway Bridge. At its highest point the bridge is 64.5 metres above water. Sapphire Princess could not berth at this terminal (see story at thread: Sapphire Princess too big for Brisbane ) because of her size and had to dock at the Fisherman Islands container terminal, a further distance from central Brisbane. The new cruise terminal, Portside Wharf, being built at Hamilton will not improve matters. Future cruise ships the size of Sapphire or bigger may not be able to dock there as they will be either: too long for the wharf or too high to fit under the bridge. How will Brisbane solve this problem? Will the Gold Coast terminal, when built, be the solution?

An artist’s impression of the new cruise terminal at Portside Wharf.

And a map showing locations of the present and future cruise terminals and the Gateway Bridge. Fisherman Islands container terminals, run separately by Patrick and P&O, are at the extreme right of the map, past Whyte Island and accessed by a causeway.

thanks for the update bulbousbow-

a new terminal will do wonders for local travellers, visitors and cruise lines/p&o who base their ship there.

looking at the map you posted i noticed ths cairncross shipyard. This was where the pacific sky had its refit/paint job done in 2000. Have P&O decided not to use their services again for pac sun/star? Do you think it has anything to do with the rust/hull problems with pacific sky just weeks after being in drydock there? (*i think this was the case) Its just a shame that the local economy/jobs arent bennifiting from these 'new' ships p&o have aquired.

The image of the Brisbane River and the Forgacs Cairncross Dockyard came from their website, see here: Engineering Division - Brisbane. The photo has obviously been manipulated. Who knows, the original shot may even have been in black and white.
