St. Thomas Breaks Cruise Ship Record
April 6, 2005

The island of St. Thomas broke its record for cruise ship passengers arrivals in a single day for the second time this year, officials said Wednesday.

Some 18,800 people poured off eight cruise ships Tuesday, smashing the previous record of 16,000 set two weeks earlier, said Edward Thomas, director of The West Indian Company LLC, which brokers cruise lines visits. The ships included the Queen Mary 2, the world's largest cruise ship.

"We're having a great season," said Steve Bornn, a Tourism Department spokesman. "I love to say it."

St. Thomas, population 50,000, is where Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the U.S. Caribbean territory, is located.

Thomas attributed the rise in visitors to aggressive marketing and a weakened U.S. dollar, which has encouraged Europeans to visit the territory of 110,000 people. At the same time, the decline of the dollar may have encouraged American travelers to head to the territory instead of Europe.

A record 2.6 million tourists visited the U.S. Virgin Islands last year, 9.7 percent more than in 2003, Gov. Charles Turnbull said last month. More than 1.96 million were cruise ship passengers, almost 11 percent more than in 2003.

Associated Press

Besides QM2, who were the other cruise ships that made up the eight?

-Caribbean Princess - Havensight
-Zuiderdam: Crown Bay
-Carnival Glory - Havensight
-Voyager of the Seas - Havensight
-Norwegian Crown: Anchorage

-Queen Mary 2: Anchorage - they must have been in the deep harbour where the Norway used to anchor.

Wednesday, April 6th - another 8 ships.

Mariner of the Seas - Havensight
-Disney Magic: Crown Bay
-Star Princess - Havensight
-Costa Atlantica - Havensight

Trouble is that from the point of view of a tourism manager I suspect that we're exactly what they don't want: we want there to be very few other people, and we probably don't spend much money!

Don't forget the winter months are when the shops make all their money because during the summer, there are very few ships visiting St. Thomas, therefore very few sales.

Starting in 2006 HAL will no longer have a ship in the Caribbean during the summer.

Norwegian Crown was on anchor near Havensight, in the middle of the bay. QM2 (farst away) and Opera (where we were on) were on anchor next to eachother behind the great rock, not visible from ashore, but just from the hills.
We made an island-tour, arranged privatly via internet, and it was NOT busy at all underway. As well as Magens-, Coki- and Sapphire bay (all beautifull) there was only 1 tourbus, ours.
Only in CharlotteAmalie town, afterwards, it was very busy.
Hendrikus.

My thoughts exactly. Just the reason I need to stay on board the ship on St Thomas day.
