Hi FolksCould you please tell me what transfers are available from central London (will probably be staying in the city the night before) to Southampton and approximately how much the transfers are? Also which transfer you would recommend. Would it be advisable to go down to Southampton the day before? Do you have any suggestions on accommodation in Southampton? Thank you for your help. Elizabeth

If you want to go by public transport you have two choices: train or scheduled coach (bus). You can find out about train times here: http://www.nationalrail.co.ukEnter your journey date & times, and you'll be given train times. Have a look at this website if you're buying your tickets fron outside the UK: http://www.acprailnet.com/britrail The other alternative is the coach. Have a look at this website: http://www.nationalexpress.com/home/hp.cfm?t=uk Again, enter your start & finish locations and your date of travel. Transfers don't really go from the very heart of central London. Most coaches go from Victoria coach station, which is on the western edge of 'central London'. The trains will probably go from Waterloo station, which is just on the south side of the river. I'm afraid I don't know anything about prices or fares, but the websites I gave above include pricing information. Finally you could hire a private tour company (I'm afraid I don't know any names) to drive you. That would be easier - they can collect you from your hotel & take you direct to the pier - but probably quite expensive. However, if you're a family of four then it might be quite competitive - or at least, not too over-the-top. UK train fares are often eye-wateringly expensive. Generally the coach is the cheapest, but it's also the slowest.

Good advice from Tom Burke. If you really are starting in central London, you can load your luggage onto a train and unload it at the other end, move it several feet to stow it in the carriage, and get it onto and off trolleys in the stations, then IMHO the train is the best method of getting from London to Southampton - it's what I do. When you get to Southampton Central station, you will need a taxi to transfer you to the dock. It's usually less than a 10 minute trip, and costs between £5 and £10, depending on which terminal you're going to. There is no need to go to Southampton the night before. London-Southampton is a commuter route, and many people do the return journey every day just to get to and from work. Trains are plentiful and generally pretty reliable. quote: Originally posted by Tom Burke: I'm afraid I don't know anything about prices or fares, but the websites I gave above include pricing information.
By the time you add in the shipping costs charged by that website, you might as well just buy the ticket in London. There are few (if any) advance purchase offers on this route, so every ticket is a walk-up ticket. If you travel after the morning peak, it's slightly cheaper - £26.70 one way at the moment, I think. Return tickets are obviously cheaper than two one-ways.If travelling at the weekend, the train operating company has a long-running special offer. Buy a standard class ticket and sit in first class. When the ticket inspector comes to call, pay him a £5 supplement (each way). Very good value.
