It's finally open! After.. ? [how many] years.. Seven Seas Voyager was the first caller today. Photos here. The formal opening of the facility, by HRH The Duke of Kent, will be on the occasion of QE2's visit on 21 Sept.

I hope that it's not just that shed at her bow?

Come on - there seems to be something near the stern too.

May I assume that we talk about the 'brick' building ashore?

Personally I hate these 'faked inaugural ceremonies' AFTER the facility (building, ship etc.) has already been used. It's completely pointless.

Sorry Pam, did not notice your post until I had posted on the same topic. Tried to remove it but was too late to make any changes.
I do though wonder why the only two replies could only post negative and sarcastic comments. Any move or initative that improves the UK cruise industry can only be a good thing and an investment of £19 million pounds, with more to follow, is no small investment.
The 'brick building' by the way is a Crowne Plaza hotel. I am sure you are already aware what the other building is.

My Scouser dad saw the pics and says it's horrible. When they said landing stage (get it right) I was expecting something along the lines of Cobh not about 10 feet + away from the dockside.

I wonder what the inside of the building is like? Can the Mersey cope with big ships (90k gt) and can the terminal?

I certainly think Liverpool has quite a lot to offer as a port of call.

Take a look at the coverage in Liverpool's local papers, the Post and the Echo.

No mention of the endless delays and mess-ups during construction in those reports. Now it is finally in working order, all that is forgotten. See Irish Sea Shipping for a good selection of photos during construction. Hope it gets good use and some more ships do actually call at Liverpool in forthcoming years.

Thanks Greybeard and Pam. It's great so see such an historic port as Liverpool investing in modern facilities to capture a slice of the new cruise market.

The more cruise terminals in the world, the more ports of call, the better.

Not forgotten . . . you can find plenty in the Post and Echo's archives about the "delays and mess-ups."

But now the terminal is finally in operation and welcoming its first arrivals, the papers, quite rightly, are concentrating on the positive.

Which is more than we can expect here, I'm sure.

As they should, the problems should be laid to rest. Just a pity the papers don't always follow suit; one rarely sees a mention of Aurora for eg without the final para mentioning Norovirus and engine prolems etc, quite tiresome.

I am not 100% sure of the maximum ship size that the terminal can handle but it is a deep water facility and could be used by QM2.
Grand Princess will be a regular visitor next summer so there is no problem handling a ship of that size and capacity.

Princess have just substituted Holyhead for Liverpool. But calls for the Grand Class are down on 2005. I noticed the Daily Post refers to Thompson Celebration as a "Luxury cruise liner". Have they ever seen her?

It is actually very nice and quite different to how I imagined it. I was expecting something along the lines of the London Barge but it's far superior and quite smart indeed. It does not feel as if it is a floating dock and I am quite sure that many did not even realise that. The only thing is the joints between the stages which are extremely awkward for anyone in a wheelchair or not steady on their feet. Pictures to follow.

The "stage" is a series of concrete floating pontoons with a galvanised steel and glazed walkway on the shoreside.

This leads to a steel framed and glazed security "shed" of no architectural merit or stature whatsoever.

After passing security you are then allowed to walk up or down half of the exisiing steam packet shore ramp which on the occasion of our visit was lined with gathered textile to cover the fact that it is simply a profile steel sheet covered walkway of some vintage.

Having reached the riverside roadway serving the new office developments around Princes dock we found that all taxis, public transport and cars collecting passengers, were not being allowed access to the riverside and could not leave the Strand.

Unless and until the passenger reception is warmer and the vehicle access issues are resolved I would give the facility about three out of ten for presence and utility.

Sorry - but for the money this falls far short of a "welcome" to a major maritime city

Oh a good match to modern ships, then.

I don't suppose anyone has built a cruise terminal in the UK, in recent years, with any architectural merit? There are probably a few abroad.
