Hi,
Does anyone know if sightseeing tours are available from the cruise port in Los Angeles? Princess are only offering one excursion and is not what we want. Any advice would be appreciated.

Check w/Gray Line tours. There may be tours operating out of nearby Long Beach hotels.

Thanks for the information. It is our first time to the west coast of America and we only get 1 day in LA. The Grays Tours seem to include the main highlights. Once again, someone with local knowledge offers advice to visitors - that is what makes this forum great.

You are welcome scorpio. Now the problem may be getting from San Pedro (port of L.A.) to the Gray Line pick-up location(s). It is approx. 30 minutes by car from the port to downtown L.A. or Beverly Hills. The freeways are easy to navigate and if you have a GPS in a rental car very easy to get around. Some car rental companies such as Enterprise Rent-a-Car will pick you up from a location and take you to their office to fill out the required paperwork-then you are on you own.

Since you have never been here before, I would avoid downtown L.A. as it is basically commercial high rises w/few points of interest and concentrate on Beverly Hills, Hollywood, The Getty Center, Santa Monica (home to many ex-pat Brits) etc. etc. I see Gray Line offers tours of those locations.

Good luck and have fun!

Bunker Hill & Downtown L.A circa late '40's/early'50's.

Fascinating background footage of Bunker Hill & Downtown Los Angeles shot for an unidentifed film, circa late 1940's/early 50's. Films shot in this location include:''Somewhere In The Night''(1946),''Cry Danger''(1951) & ''Kiss Me Deadly''(1955).

Great find David! In some ways (ok, not every way!) I would have loved to have lived here during the time of my grandparents. LA was a VERY different city in those days than it is today. 'Bunker Hill' as seen in this film no longer exists. Today, there are high-rises replacing those Victorian and Post World War 1 apartments and businesses but on the plus side, our smog problem is nothing like it was in the 1940s-70s!

What would have been the LA subway system if the freeways had not taken over. LA has more cars than roads can handle and no place to build new ones. LA has started a subway system in 1990 similar to what is on this vintage map from 1925

And my hometown of Pasadena, California had more cars per capita than any city in the World in the early 20th Century.

Trousdale, Los Angeles’s Forgotten Architectural Mecca, Makes a Comeback
Once favored by the leading lights of Old Hollywood, the Trousdale section of Los Angeles fell out of fashion in the
‘70s — its trove of midcentury architecture tarted up or torn down — only to be rediscovered by a new wave of
glamorous Angelenos devoted to preserving its unique style. It’s ready for its close-up, again.
