I need some suggestions for Miami Hotels, cheap hotels...first cruise, am concerned about getting to and from airport and shuttles cost of cabs etc...seems like most hotel check out times are early Majesty departing at 5:00. Will be arriving a day early...Can I pick just any hotel in Miami and be assured of getting around easily? Need help desperately...Rather spend the cash at ports of call then at the hotel....

I doubt that you will find a "cheap" hotel in Miami. Suggest you have your TA look into this for you.
Hotel check-out is usually either 11am or 12 noon and you usually can board the ship around 1pm - some ships board earlier. There will be lots to do and explore on the ship once you are on board.
Have a great time.

While I can understand why you'd rather save your pennies to spend on the ship, NJ Carol, I echo Sympatico's sentiments. On a recent cruise I tried a do-it-yourselfer on the internet and ended up in a Comfort Inn on the edge of Miami airport that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy -- and it was surrounded with even worse looking places.

Do yourself a favour and go first class. You'll arrive on the ship rested and relaxed.

Very recently I stayed in the 'Surfcomber' at Miami's Art Deco district - South Beach. It is a Doubletree Hotel. It has it's own web site: http://www.surfcomber.com/

It was a pretty reasonable Hotel, not 5 star, but not 2 star either! It was only 30 mins from the Airport and maybe 30 mins from the port, even in busy traffic.

I've no idea of the cost as it was part of NCL's pre-cruise package.

Malcolm - just for the fun of it I checked the rate for 2 people, arr. Nov. 9th, leaving Nov. 10th and it was anywhere from $209. - $249US, + $7.00 resort fee, excluding taxes. This is by no means a cheapie. It was going to cost me $310.00Cdn to stay one night at the Hyatt, Pier 66 in FLL - single occupancy, that converts to about $155US. Doubletree Hotels are not cheap.

If you are prepared to stay in FFL the one people recommend is Amerisuites, usually around the $70 - $80 + tax rate. The run a comp shuttle to the port in FFL, but have no idea how much it would cost for a taxi to Miami, less than the difference in the rates you quote I expect.

Tri Citytaxi shuttle service is about $60.00 to or from Miami to FL. It is not uncommon in most hotels to allow a late check out time if you ask. Most are free but those that charge are small fee. Kevin

Wow...it was an O.K Hotel, but not worth that rate! Even worse was the fact that when I was there on 1st September, the road outside the Hotel, was like a construction site!

Thanks Sympatico!

Malcolm - I bet if you went back there next year the road will still be under construction. Before we started cruising we used to go to Pompano Beach, FL. for a couple of weeks in May. It seemed the roads that were under construction the previous year were still under construction the next year. We could never understand this as with their lack of snow and bad weather, we couldn't figure out why the work hadn't been done. Even here in TO with ice & snow, we seem to get our roads repaired fairly quickly.

I once stayed at a Best Western (I think it was called Best Western Marina Bay). It's across the street from the Bayside mall and less than a mile away from port. You can walk to the mall to kill some time and they have some neat restaurants i.e, Hard Rock cafe. I highly recommend the Italian Restaurant Lombardi's. Sit outside and watch the boats in the marina. The hotel is rather dumpy but you're only going to be there for one night and I think you can get a room for $80 or so.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I ended up getting the Fountaineblu Hilton Miami Beach on Priceline for about $80.00. Has anyone here ever stayed there?

The Fountaineblu is a classic! The hotel itself is older. It probably dates back to the 1930s when it was queen of the resorts. It's probably been 10 years since I was last there and it looked great. I'm sure it will be fine and for $80 you're not going to find anything cheaper, especially right on the beach. Have fun!

The Fountainbleau Hilton is supposed to be a really nice hotel - the grounds are beautiful I heard. I have to check out priceline. We are trying to stay there for 3 nights Jan 5-8 and the cheapest rate I've gotten is $299 US per night! What did you have to do to get that rate? Any tips?

P.S. What star rating hotel did you choose to end up with the Foutainblue. I'm just curious what category it fell under 3, 4 or 5 star?
