Hi,
My wife and I are taking our first cruise in May, we are going on the RCCL Radiance of teh Seas from Hawaii to Vancouver. Having not done a cruise before, we were wondering what sort of dress code is expected. I am anticipating a number of black tie formal evenings, plus.... ? The RCCL web site is a little short on detail on what to expect (although, I think part of it may be down at the moment).
Any tips/advice most warmly welcomed.

regards and thanks,

Norman & Gabrielle
(England)

Hi Norman,
If you´re anticipating lots of formal nights I´m afraid you´ll be disappointed. On an 11 nights cruise with RCI there are usually two formal, three smart casual and six casual nights.

Hi,
no that's about what we expected. In my opinion men are easy. I either wear a tux, a suit or a shirt. My wife, on the other hand, would be interested to know what 'sort' of attire for the formal and smart casual. Its probably something to do with that 'buying things because I have nothing to wear' thing that just baffles us men

Welcome aboard Norman!

Yes, us Men are easy! We can get away with one dark suit, a couple of ties and a few shirts! You don't even need a Tux - but it's nice!

Now as a Man, what do I know about women's fashion - not a lot! But having cruised on several essentially 'American' ships I was surprised to find that American women's tastes seem somewhat different to British women's.

The ladies seem to either wear 'Pants Suits' (trouser suits) which were not particularly dressy or the other extreme, 'glitzy' tops and dresses, comprising of lots of millions sequins!

I think the British idea of formal would not be so 'plain' or 'sparkly', but dresses which were more toned-down i.e. elegent?

But as I said, what do I know?

(I suspect this was of no help to your wife what so ever and insulted every American woman reading this! Sorry. )

Norman, do check out the 'Readers Reviews' (Menu Left). There are six on 'Radiance' from real passengers!

O.K. Here goes a try from a woman's view. Formal: You will see many long, very formal dresses ( I wore one from my daughter's wedding several years ago), but you will also the "glitzy" tops with black skirts or slacks. Black is very nice as you can dress it up anyway you want. Smart casual: I wore the sort of clothes I would wear to Church or out to a nice restaurant. May be dress or pantsuit, nice blouse and skirt. Casual: Skirt/slacks with a blouse or sweater. Just not jeans, shorts or tank tops. I try to mix and match to keep from packing the whole wardrobe. Have a wonderful cruise and make a report when you get back.

Being British but living in Canada please let me also help your wife. Evening gowns are seen as much as glitzy tops with black pants or skirts. This is probably one of the few places left in North America where women can dress up. The previous person said she wore the dress she wore to her daughters wedding, being British you may or may not realize that in North America evening gowns are frequently worn to weddings. Hope this helps your wife. Have a wonderful holiday.

Oh, you are so lucky to be cruising on the Radiance....It is a fabulous ship!

In fact, the Dining Room is so beautiful you will want to dress up a little more for dinner and I think my cruising mates felt pretty much the same. In most cases you will see people changing out of their formal into their 'grubs' as soon as possible after dinner.....Not on the Radiance, it seemed that everyone stayed dressed-up and even on less formal nights dressed a little more glamorous.

We Ballroom Dance, so we always gussie up a little more...my partner owns a tux (we cruise a lot) but we keep it 'fun' with Cartoon character vests and bright bow ties or cumberbunds. Less formal nights he will wear a nice sport coat ensemble. Myself, I enjoy dressing to the nines and use the formal nights as my 'Cinderella' times. But there is a wide spread of taste as far as women's fashion...The idea is to just have fun and not worry too much about how you may look to others. Also, comfort is very important...wear your tighest outfit the first formal night, heaven knows if you will even be able to get into it by the second formal night!!!
